G'day. I'm Teia (te-a), I'm a first year conservation biology student from Western Australia. I post about conservation, plants, art, nature, and anything relating to creating my dream life.
I'm dyslexic so please bear that in mind when reading my posts, that there will be spelling and grammar errors.

I originally got tumblr as an alternative to other social medias, a place of quietness and to be able to surround myself with other people searching for that peace too. Trying to kick my phone and dopamine addiction, and it has REALLY helped with that. At the beginning I was choosing tumblr over other social medias, and using it slowly and sparingly, just for the moments of reflection, quietness and inspiration.
But recently it has become the same if not worse for my mental health as other social medias. I have found a place of peace and quite, but at the same time, I'm useing it as an unhealthy destination, and I get stuck doom scrolling on tumblr for an hour. Which is the COMPLETE opposite to what I wanted out of tumblr.
When I scroll on tumblr I ignore the posts about nature and sustainability which i have curated, and instead fall into political holes that end with me feeling shitty and mad, which is not what I want on a regular 24/7 basis.
Iv created as good as a relationship I can with a modden phone, but I'm still yearning more. More disconnection, more quietness, and more time to focus on what I really love. So for this reason I'm going to be deleting tumblr from my phone. I'm even planning to get a flip phone as I have falled back into old habits surrounding other social media.
I'm not sure how active I'll become on here after iv deleted it, I might end up becoming a lurker then slowly falling away, re-evaluate my relationship with tumblr, then come back. Because I really do love tumblr, it's that peace I'm looking for with social media, but I can't achieve it yet, untill I become more disciplined with myself.

If you're feeling anxious or depressed about the climate and want to do something to help right now, from your bed, for free...
Start helping with citizen science projects
Public participation in science is increasing, and citizen science has a central part in this. It is a contribution by the public to researc
What's a citizen science project? Basically, it's crowdsourced science. In this case, crowdsourced climate science, that you can help with!
You don't need qualifications or any training besides the slideshow at the start of a project. There are a lot of things that humans can do way better than machines can, even with only minimal training, that are vital to science - especially digitizing records and building searchable databases
Like labeling trees in aerial photos so that scientists have better datasets to use for restoration.
Or counting cells in fossilized plants to track the impacts of climate change.
Or digitizing old atmospheric data to help scientists track the warming effects of El Niño.
Or counting penguins to help scientists better protect them.
Those are all on one of the most prominent citizen science platforms, called Zooniverse, but there are a ton of others, too.
Oh, and btw, you don't have to worry about messing up, because several people see each image. Studies show that if you pool the opinions of however many regular people (different by field), it matches the accuracy rate of a trained scientist in the field.

I spent a lot of time doing this when I was really badly injured and housebound, and it was so good for me to be able to HELP and DO SOMETHING, even when I was in too much pain to leave my bed. So if you are chronically ill/disabled/for whatever reason can't participate or volunteer for things in person, I highly highly recommend.
Next time you wish you could do something - anything - to help
Remember that actually, you can. And help with some science.
Yup, these are actually *really* important. And a small bit of work helps, so it’s doable even if you’re snowed under with survival work or in too much pain to concentrate for longer periods.
It’s multiply-checked by more than one person, so don’t worry about fucking it up because your concentration is fucked. Your input is valuable but not the only input.
I find Zooniverse very good, and it does Citizen Historian work too - I spent time digitising concentration camp records because a) families still don’t know what happened to some of their loved ones b) this makes the records available for historians without travelling to archives in person, which I can testify is *invaluable* for disabled historians and helps cut the need for overseas travel to do vital historical work.
It unexpectedly helped me with learning how to decipher premodern handwriting too, which proved really useful in my academic stuff. You *will* pick up valuable skills doing this. Put it on your CV.
Other places you can go to do citizen science, from the notes
(Thanks to everyone who left these in the notes! If you know more, put them in the notes, and I might add them! And ty @enbycrip for the fantastic addition that covered a bunch of details I didn't get to)
MapSwipe (collaboration between several Red Cross organizations and Doctors Without Borders, update vital geospatial data)
Smithsonian archives (transcriptions, many subjects)
Cornell Bird Lab (birds)
FoldIt (folding proteins)
Fathomverse (sea animals)
Project Monarch (butterflies)
In person
Bioblitz (nature)
Species watch (species)
Audobon Society (birds)

I'm in a really great place in my life right now. It's not that I feel happy all the time, it's that I feel content with life.
I didn't have an easy time during school, especially highschool, which was really tough mentally, and near the end, also physically. Due to chronic pain which took away my all reasons to live.
I have had to fight tooth and nail to be reconsised and taken seriously, to be able to live a normal life. And now I have the most normal life someone like me can have, I have my reasons to live again back.
I was diagnosed with dyslexia after years of fighting an uphill battle, I didn't even have the right tools to climb. I have learnt to live and thrive with my chronic pain, and although I'm still fighting the fight to be taken seriously, I finally have the weapons to do to. And I'm starting university in an area of study I have always wanted, after thinking I was too dumb to even go to uni (I just had undiagnosed dyslexia).
I still got some shit going on that I have 0 control over and effects me every day. But iv learnt to just not give a fuck.
You don't need to be happy every second to live a happy life. I think the key to living a "happy life" is contentness. I want to live a content life, and I'm finally, after my whole life of being derailed, dragging my wheels through thick dirt, on track. And you know what? it's ok if I fall off track again, because I know how to get back on track again.
I forget what this plant is - some kind of pennywort I got from my partner who got it from the internet - but it's been growing in this jar for 5ish years now, and it seems to be winning in the long run. (there were two of these sprigs for a while, then they dried up, then it grew three. so presumably next year there will be four.)
(1 gallon jar. rip to the dracaena I had to snip off when I moved)
as you can see, it's mostly vallisneria at this point...I used to have some interesting red-leaf plants as well as susswassertang and chara, but the vallisneria took over almost completely, except for the plant above which I guess can poke out above it. (the above plant's main root is the thick green stalk running along the bottom).
first time propagating polka dot plants and the other tropical tri colour plant, hopfully everything works. My polka dots were in desperate need of propagation. They all now sit on my shower windowsill
My dad has always grown weird and wonderful food. My mum always complains about how he should grow food that we can actually use in the kitchen. So I took that as a sign I should try to grow food myself, besides the strawberries that have gotten very burn over Summer.
I brought lettuce, capsicum (peppers for u Americans), spring onion, and beetroot, though I haven't planted the beetroot yet.
I planted the lettuce near the orange tree straight in the ground. Spring onion in a bunnings basket. And the capsicum in pots. I plan to put the beetroot next to the banana tree straight in the ground, but I'm just gonna run it past my dad first.
I'm starting small, but hopfully by the end of the year I can be growing alot more foods!

1st book of the year + Crochet granny square to match the cover to start off the year and book blanket.
Goodreads review and crochet information->
Review -
An extremely interesting and important book. Fire Country was an awesome eye opener and introduction to indigenous fire management. As someone studying conservation, the topic of sustainable land management is so important, and the conservation needs to be led by the people who managed the land before us.
The line "the country loves us when we fit into the divine beauty of being apart of it." Is somthing I'm going to carry with me forever. I truly believe in and have experienced the effects of being apart of country. That connection with country is what will save our whole world.
I felt very engaged in the book. As someone with dyslexia, I have a track record of taking a year to finish 1 book. This one, I finished the same week I brought it. Yes, it's written very simply, but in some parts, it moved me to tears. But that simple writing helped me understand the information better and chew through the book.
While I don't agree with absolutely everything written and said, and some parts annoy me when he doesn't go into details about examples, and just turns around and goes, "Trust me bro.". It is still a wonderful book, and so bloody intresting and a real eye opener.

Crochet Book Blanket -
I heard this idea from my mate to crochet a granny square to match the colours on the front of each book you read. Then once yo have enough, make a blanket out of them. Know it will take me a LONG time to read about books to make a blanket out of, I thought I would start now.
