Double knit mushroom tapestries ๐
putting some old tapestries up on here :^) tragically these are the only photos I have of this piece, as it sold several years ago. looking back it's one of my most ambitious and complex tapestries, and I wish I had spent some more time with it before selling it, and taken the time to photograph it more properly.
based on this painting of a black stag in lascaux cave:
This is actually so stunning!!! excellent color selection. how did u do three color double knitting
awwww ty :'^) the short answer is "painstakingly." the more technical answer is: i basically just double knit, but carrying a third color all the way through. rather than just swapping colors for each other, ie purple on one side = blue on the other, i had a little rotation where purple on the right side = blue on the wrong side, blue on the right side = yellow on the wrong side, yellow on the right side = purple on the wrong side. this results in a lot of tangled yarn and a lot of little mistakes, but allows for three colors to be in use at all times. bobbins rather than full balls of yarn makes this easier.
THAT SAID... if you want to double knit with a third color, there are easier and smarter ways to do it, if you a) only have the third color in select areas of the piece, and/or b) don't mind if the reverse side is not a perfect mirror. the way i've found easiest is to basically do a double knitting and intarsia mashup, where you swap in a third color for a section at a time and don't carry it across the whole row if i you can help it. here are some photos of the front and back of a piece that i think make that more comprehensible lol:
the absolute easiest version of this is to just have a section of intarsia on one side, and don't worry about the back. for relatively small areas, you can also knit the third color as the front AND back, though the larger a section you do this for the more it will fuck the stretch/tension of the fabric unless you use two bobbins. which is a tradeoff in terms of more tangling!
sorry for such a long response! I love talking about double knitting lol <3
