a crude summary of one of my favorite musicals
the german word for villain, Bösewicht, is so great. like not only are you evil, you're also some sort of gnome about it
Hah. Just pulled a fast one on Hades. He’s going to let us both go. All we have to do is walk one after the other and I don’t have to look back. This is going to be SO easy.
Is she still there?
Of course she’s still there! Why wouldn’t she be? In fact, I’m pretty sure I can hear her still walking behind me! Then again, maybe that’s the sound of my own footsteps…
I mean, it is Hades, lord of the dead. He’s pretty territorial about the souls that cross the Styx. Maybe he pulled a fast one on you?
That’s a good point… why would he let me win? This is a trap, isn’t it? He’s trying to fool me into leaving without her. But no. No, I shouldn’t look. I know she’s right behind me. I just know it… right?
She's being awfully quiet, isn't she? I wonder what she thinks of all this
That’s a good point…. I can’t hear her anymore. I can hear the walls echoing my feet but not her. Surely she’s not there. I can see the light but I can’t hear her. Maybe just a quick glance back. Just to make sure she’s there. Hades probably won’t even notice. I can’t leave without her. I just gotta be sur-
It’s you
“i should take a walk for my mental health” boring, tired, i don’t even really wanna do it tbh
“i need to check the perimeter” i need to check the perimeter

gender affirming pointy teeth
life is so awesome if we ignore all that
Das Leben ist so geil, wenn man die Gesamtsituation ignoriert
*genuinely absorbed zero information* got it
it’s never a normal temperature anymore it’s always some fucking bullshit
I need you young people to know it was almost never this hot when I was a child. Millennials and Gen Xers are all nostalgic and excited about summer because it was about ten to twenty degrees cooler to experience it back then!
I cannot express to you how FAST it has gone. I grew up in a world that does not exist now. We're starting on the path to reverse it, globally. You might not know how much solar has EXPLODED in the last decade or two. It's gone from a side thing, a weirdo novelty that was just Not Viable... to whole countries investing in infrastructure. but we have to keep fighting big oil and fascism everywhere we can in order to keep on this road to a new better less scorching burning earth.
But any time you wonder wtf the weather is doing- THIS IS NOT NORMAL, NO. THIS IS NOT WHAT IT WAS EVEN TWENTY YEARS AGO.
Can vouch for this! It's not just nostalgia for our childhoods, it's not poor memory. Literally like just twenty years ago, summer was not this hot for this long in so many places.
There are two different sites that I can access historical weather averages from. One of them uses a dataset from 1990-2020. The other uses 1980-2010. The July and August average high temperatures on the 1990-2020 scale are 0.8 C (~1.6 F) higher than the 1980-2010 scale. That's not collective bad memory, it's a measurable change in the climate. And that near-degree is averaged across the entire month. So it might mean that every day is about a degree warmer (not super noticeable), but more often it seems that most days are near the older average and then we get a bunch of days of Heatwave Georg skewing the statistics.
We can reverse this. Despite certain governments' and corporations' resistance, we ARE reversing this, and it will keep shifting over time because we have tools we can use. There will be bumps in the road to get there, but we've fixed all sorts of problems up to now, there's no reason we can't get this one eventually.
Ok, fuck, I’ll try falling in love with myself first. Ughhhhhhh
Damn right babygirl, too good for the tags.

I don't care if you think the adaptation is good or bad at adapting exactly what was in the original. I care about what it has to say about the original. What it keeps, what it leaves out, and what those say about the writer, director, showrunner, and/or translator's interpretation of the story in comparison to mine. I care about whether it will make me think about the old story in a new context, a new light. I care about whether it will make me understand some layer of it that I never appreciated before, or if it's just going to repeat the original word-for-word in the wrong medium with no stylistic interpretation, or if it's going to take the story away and apply a stale set of tropes and archetypes to character names.
Don't mistake "it made my neurons go brr" for "good" and "it left out my favourite scenes" for "bad". If you want to judge it by those measures, I would never try to stop you, I make enough snap judgements of my own. Just be honest about it, and stop wasting the time and energy of those who want to think about it deeper.
Just as one example, top of mind:
What does it say about the Interview with the Vampire TV show that they made Louis a brothel owner in his mortal life, instead of a plantation owner?
I think it says that they recognize that Louis was already trained to view some people as less than himself, as employees, as objects, their time and labour to be bought and sold. He defends them against the cruel, but they're still a commodity to him. It says the writers and decision makers understand that part of Louis's character is that he views mortals as less than, even as he values their lives so much that he feels guilt over killing to survive because I think he knows on some level that the only difference between them is luck.
At the same time, it recognizes that slavery is something you don't let your protagonist do on TV anymore if you want them to be sympathetic. Anne Rice wrote the character with intention, he was supposed to be controversial, just not as controversial as we think of it now. This just updates that choice for a slightly different era. It recontextualizes an important part of the character's backstory, without dulling the edges too far, without sacrificing the nuance more than absolutely necessary. I think that's a really interesting adaptational choice!
You can do this with any adaptation. Ask yourself why certain choices might have been made, what they might add, what they might take away, whether the creators understand the story and the characters the same way as you, and if they don't, whether they might have some insights you don't. You don't have to like every choice, but it's good to think about why. Sometimes the why helps you to work through your dislike and be able to judge an adaptation on its own merit.
it's crazy how february-june didn't happen

The fastest way to accomplish The Project is to cease being afraid of The Project. The Project cannot maim you. The Project cannot kill you. The Project is more afraid of you than you are of it. It is okay if The Project turns out differently from how it was in your head, and it is okay if it has flaws. You are capable of engaging with The Project.
