came across something else that asked for translation checkers but they had hoped they wouldn't run into anyone too over-perfectionistic that they have to overhaul the whole script

Just when we were talking about how dismal the otome fantl scene is I come across a group(of one person) that's doing fantl for switch games like WoF and lately Yamihana
On their quality page they say they are using mtl with human editing
Literally why.
It also adds "We recognise that 'quality' means different things to different people" but somehow you choose to be the lowbar by having to clean up for a machine and call that translation.
"Rather than aim for perfection we aim for accessibility" ok so what if you get it to all other languages but it isn't even accurate to what the work wants to convey, then you've lost it. You're no better than gamedevs that claim they are 多言語 and then they all turn out to be mtl.
You don't have to aim for perfection but at least stay true to the work and respect the original writers and your audience who stake their trust in your product, even if its an amateur work. MTL should be used as a tool to assist you, not something that does all the work and you're assisting them to sound human. You can't call yourself a translator, only a robot editor.

In Memoriam…Ohba Kenji
In memory of Ohba Kenji-san, who was stronger and kinder than anyone else.

It should probably go without saying that my first encounter with Ohba Kenji-san was through a crt television. I remember it was around the time that "Battle Fever J" (1970), which originally began on Aomori Broadcasting's 6 a.m. Sunday morning block, had its time slot changed and became an evening program.
During the opening credits, Ohba-san's Akebono Shiro, who looked like Tarzan, is seen performing tremendous jumps and then walking down Nishishinjuku with a baby elephant at his side. I had watched both "Himitsu Sentai Gorenger" and "J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai" too, but no other character had made such an impactful entrance. I felt that the "animal action" in Battle Kenya that Shiro transforms into (who I later found out Ohba-san was also the Suit Actor for) was even more powerful than the Amazon Rider, who I had really loved during my kindergarten days. Putting it simply, Ohba-san was a person who made an impact in every aspect.
The following year, Ohba-san played Oume Daigoro, also known as DenziBlue, in "Denshi Sentai Denziman" (1980). Ohba-san was the first cast member to appear in two consecutive seasons of Super Sentai without time to rest, and this too was unprecedented. He also broke the pattern of Blue's being cool and handsome, and the way he was characterized as someone who loved anpan to an addictive level was also great. Daigoro managed to lighten things up even as the final episode approached and the mood was serious, which only made Ohba Kenji-san's presence in my life grow stronger
And then, if things had continued as they had been, this would've been about my memories of "Space Sheriff Gavan" (1982), but I didn't watch Gavan as it aired. For some reason, Gavan wasn't broadcast in my hometown.
Before long, I moved to Tokyo, and began connecting with people who shared my interests. It was then that I was finally able to watch Space Sheriff Gavan. Having watched Gavan nearly 6 years after the finale of Denziman, the scenes contained constant surprises, and Ohba-san's acting had become sharp and refined. While maintaining a semi good looking image and approachable demeanor, Ichijoji Retsu expressed a full range of emotions, from his serious expressions to the sadness he carried on his shoulders. Moreover, his smile was as gentle as that of Akebono Shiro or Oume Daigoro…I believe that Ichijoji Retsu was a character that represented the culmination of Ohba-san's talent. It was undoubtedly his defining role.
Of course, Ohba-san wasn't just an actor known for Gavan. I'll personally never forget him as Inukai Genpachi from the 1983 film "Satomi Hakkenden." Despite being introduced as a samurai general on the side of evil, he eventually opened his eyes to justice through a "transition of emotions." And, during his harrowing final scene, I felt as if I witnessed the vast range of Ohba-san's expressive prowess as an actor.
Many years passed as I held onto those memories, when I then had the opportunity to directly meet Ohba-san. I remember it was through my involvement as a planning consultant for the manga "Space Sheriff Gavan: Kuroki Eiyuu". When I headed to the ryotei in Kagurazaka with Editor T-san, sure enough, Ohba-san was there. Forgive me for saying such a cliche thing, but Ohba-san was an openhearted, truly good person. The saying goes, "The stronger they are, the gentler their smile is," which I think perfectly describes someone like him.
On our way back home, we took Ohba-san to his lodging by taxi. The words he spoke and the bow he gave as he got out of the car are still burned into my memory. "Ohba-san was thankful from the bottom of his heart, wasn't he"……I found myself saying something like that to T-san as we headed home.
The other day, his time came. When news of Ohba Kenji-san's passing broke, lots of people posted photos of themselves with Ohba-san, along with words of their condolences. Ohba-san was smiling in every photo, and so were the people next to him.
It's as if Ohba-san finished his mission of bringing smiles to tons of people and has departed for the galaxy.
This was a real strange adventure that I thought I would have everything answered as much at I had gathered over the years, but it still managed to surprise me.
I shall keep it within reflecting on the process side of it and possible interpretations of the information received.
I am no stranger to interviews, having worked on magazine trivia but this was one that I knew, after having to face whatever Garumani had done, required me to communicate with the characters the same way Uesugi had heard them. I was already itching to practice character voicings and animate them through the sheer will of the text. The characters should talk to the audience the same way as they talk to the creator. That was my goal in this to provide respect to the work and to the characters.
Ironically, while working on it, I had asked myself: How true were these answers? Would they be, like real interviews, conceal the truth to spectacularize things, either on part of the speaker or the interviewer? Or be like what the Complete edition did and have more contradictions on this runway? Trivia of characters outside of their role in the story have always been fascinating tidbits, and anyone would take that as truth...but in this case, we don't know that. I first thought of this when looking at the MBTI question, which, asking game characters to do a pseudoscientific test was already queer, but then again, this had become a trend in introducing characters much more than profile sheets. Having it be semi-dishonest may actually tell me more about the characters rather than one the author had set for them.
A little bit more fun stuff: searching up on the real life names of things has unlocked major googling skills. Also, teenagers, man.
One of the more contentious things on the job was Meiyo. Like, sorry, he's not the trans woman yuri lesbian icon, he's actually larping the whole time, was definitely a big uhWhAt thing in my brain, so when faced with translating that answer responsibly, it was a real pickle. Although, to some extent, it did make sense and the last statement did reassure that this conclusion may not be the finalSUPERfinal dot psd mindset Meiyo has. What a loathsome child. Making folks on this dimension solve your problems.
Just to note, I have no direct contact with the localized game whatsoever other than what others have shown me or what I've seen out of morbid curiosity. There was some sort of concern if others may find it too different from what they had initially read, but overall I'm not that bothered. What's done is done. Am I disappointed things turned out this way? Yes, I would be lying if I said I didn't. I recall in Day 2 of Mitsuki's route where his decision to cosplay his bias is one of contradiction: That there is nobody on this earth who can really emulate Major Mizuchi, but if there were anyone who decided to, only he had better be the best emulation he could ever be, for anyone else would surely do an imperfect version. This was exactly what I felt doing all this. Creating by integrity is a hard job. Humbling myself was another.
All things said, this was a fun thing to do, I wish I could do something about the character pages themselves bc there's so much good direction. I still lament that the actually fun questions from fleets weren't included(uesg initially had up to 500 questions damn). For me, I feel it might be time to have it diffuse a little longer. Too many things to lament and I need an income.

Anyhow I won't go into fantl around these parts bc my current style and methodology is very 'ugh cringe localizer not translating exactly what the text is saying and being against honorifics' and I am not going to waste my braincells under a crunch time. We're really in shit hours here.

If yall haven't noticed from my Blade x Shugo Chara post, I have been doing this huge project where I take live action toku heroes and dress them up like magical girls! Mostly PreCure atm, but I have a whole list and will be expanding to Ultra in the near future as well!
