This post analyzes a scene from Chapter 16 of The Anatomy of Love in which Mizuki has a private conversation with Sakura in his office. Bits of dialogue, action, and details are broken down to explain how Mizuki's ""kindness"" was part of his nice guy act to disguise his true, predatory colors.

Obviously, if you haven't read Chapter 16 yet then you should definitely not read this post because there are spoilers below.

Before we get to the slideshow, I'll briefly explain the behaviors of sexual predators and how they groom their victims. The information I'm about to share is taken from this article from MCASA. I wrote the scenes between Mizuki and Sakura using the information from that article as a guideline for how Mizuki, as a predator, would behave or speak to Sakura. Now, let's examine the typical stages a sexual predator goes through to groom their victim.

Targeting the victim - predators look for victims who are vulnerable as in the victim is emotionally needy, often alone, has low confidence in themselves, and/or has little to no parental attention.

Gaining the victim's trust - predators study their victim and the victim's needs. By gathering more information on the victim, predators have an idea as to how they can approach, converse with, and fulfill the victim's needs.

Filling a need - predators will fulfill the victim's needs by providing gifts, affection, and/or attention. In doing so, the victim starts to see the predator as an important figure who supports them when no one else can.

Isolating the victim - now that the predator has enough information on the victim and has established a trusting relationship, the predator will try to find ways to maintain this relationship and spend alone time with the victim

Sexualizing the interaction - once the victim is isolated, predators will begin grooming the victim with nonsexual touching. Nonsexual touching can include accidental or playful touching that can seem as innocent as a pat on the shoulder, a back rub, or an accidental brush with a breast or buttock. By starting with nonsexual touching, predators normalize the touches and gradually increase the intimacy of the touches so that the victim becomes desensitized and does not resist the more sexual touches.

Maintaining control - once the abuse begins, the predator will verbally/physically threaten the victim and/or normalize the abuse to enforce secrecy and maintain the relationship.

Now that we have some information on how a predator behaves, let's examine the conversation between Mizuki and Sakura from Chapter 16. Fair warning, I had to squeeze in a lot of stuff, so you'll definitely have to zoom in on the photos if you're not using desktop (apologies about that!).

Phew! I hope this breakdown shed some light on Mizuki's dialogue and actions, as well as the typical behavior of a sexual predator.
