there  was  something  so  surreal  about  the  things  that  were  happening  in  red  creek  ,  for  the  first  time  the  thoughts  touching  her  in  more  than  just  a  passing  way  .  when  she  was  younger  ,  she  had  been  so  idealistic  ,  protected  by  her  parents  and  looking  forwards  to  life  .  she  thought  now  that  maybe  her  eyes  were  opening  little  by  little  to  what  was  really  going  on  and  how  those  losses  must  feel  ,  empathetic  heart  bleeding  more  and  more  for  those  left  behind  .  she  isn't  there  for  personal  mourning  but  to  think  about  the  lives  that  have  been  lost  ,  to  consider  the  hole  they  left  in  the  world  and  all  their  lives  .  then  ,  the  veil  is  pulled  back  and  there's  more  writing  than  she  remembers  ,  a  second  for  her  brain  to  catch  up  to  the  foreign  thing  that  is  taking  place  ...  she  doesn't  make  a  noise  as  others  seem  to  have  some  kind  of  reaction  .  blink  once  .  instinctually  ,  she  reaches  out  and  grabs  onto  the  hand  of  the  person  standing  beside  her  ,  having  came  alone  ,  separated  initially  from  anyone  .  it  is  almost  a  knee  jerk  reaction  but  she  doesn't  let  go  ,  least  of  all  trying  to  comprehend  the  presence  of  her  sisters  name  .  not  a  word  spoken  .  fight  ,  flight  ...  freeze  .

                             hana    doesn't    question    the    hand    that    falls    into    hers,    simply    squeezing    it    in    response.    it's    an    offering    of    comfort,    a    sense    of    community    as    theirs    crumbles    around    them.    mouth    hangs    slightly    ajar    as    it's    unveiled    to    host    more    occupants    than    it    should. she might gasp, but she isn't sure.    her    heart    rises    in    her    throat.    their    named    etched    into    the    memorial    like    a    premature    headstone.    is    it    a    threat    ?    a    warning    ?    a    cruel    joke    ?    she    wonders    if    the    other    has    noticed    her    own    family    occupying    a    space    on    the    memorial.    is    it    better    to    tell    her    or—    ❝    do    you   want    to    leave    ?    ❞ 

the pinch grabs his attention and he glances over, eyes meeting piper's for just a split second before she heads off. without words he knows and he follows. just like he has since he was a kid, followed behind his older siblings. anywhere. off a cliff if that's what piper told him was cool. "you okay?" griffin asks as they get outside, pulling at the sleeves of his too-short jacket. it's a dumb question because he knows nothing is okay and he felt that same way she did in there, the grief and sadness weighing on everyone, making it hard to even think straight. "some of the flowers in there are dying already. they should've caught that. the bereavement committee people or whatever."

                             for   the   first   time   of   the   night,   a   smile   graces   piper's   features.   griffin   heard   her   silent   request   &   obliged,   like   any   good   sibling   would.   ❝   i'm   alright,   are   you   ?   ❞   she   says,   lies,   because   she's   not   okay   for   reasons   that   would   puzzle   anyone   who   heard   them.   something   about   a   funeral   service   always   feel   wrong,   but   she   can't   place   blame   on   the   planner—   he   knew   her   too,   after   all.   ❝   just   think   of   it   like   the   flowers   are   mourning   too,   yeah   ?   i'm   sure   the   whole   town   will   seem   like   it's   wilting   for   a   while.   ❞   she   pauses,   tips   her   head   up   to   look   at   the   dark   sky.   what   comes   out   is   something   she's   been   afraid   to   say   out   loud,   ❝   this   sort   of...   confirmed   it,   right   ?   that   someone   bad   is   hiding   in   red   creek   ?   ❞

clementine’s nose loves to  sneak  into  places  it  doesn’t  belong,  every  hidden  nook  and  cranny,  taking  pleasure  in  burrowing  deep  into  other  people’s  lives  and  extracting  information.  a  collector  of  treasures.  she  doesn’t  see  anything  wrong  with  that, doesn't really stop to think about it  —  her  strange  way  of  being  close  with  others.  not  nearly  enough,  but  a  good  start.  a  desperate  wish  to  stuff  as  many  humans  as  possible  into  her  cobwebbed  heart  ;  blame  her  upbringing.  the  most  recent  murder  holds  up  a  magnifying  glass,  amplifying  that  clawing  need,  keeping  her  lingering  outside  town  hall like a sad spirit.  she  knows  humankind  is  curious,  morbid  —  will  shake  their  heads  and  say  they  can’t  take  it  while  never  once  looking  away.  the  site  of  a  brutal  killing,  no  doubt  about  it  …  a  potential  socializing  spot  ?  maybe.  piper  talbot  appears  like  a  frazzled gift  from  above,  both proving  her  theory and pulling  an  immediate  smile  across  her  face.  the  excitement  of  talking  to  someone  spills  from  clementine,  making  her  response  sound  inappropriate,  entirely  too  scintillating,  “  oh,  and  this  is  only  the  beginnin’.  ”

                             an   unseemly   response   pulls   her   from   her   own   stupor;   an   equally   misplaced   laugh   leaving   piper.   ❝   jesus,   clem–   way   to   sound   totally   slasher   flick.   ❞   she   shifts   her   weight   on   her   feet.   a   bit   dark,   she   supposes,   considering   there   really   is   a   slasher   in   red   creek.   two   confirmed   killings   &   a   missing   woman   certainly   seem   to   point   that   way.   her   head   tilts   from   it's   focus   on   the   town   hall   to   ponder   clementine   rhodes   instead.   could   it   be   you   ?   are   you   capable   of   this   ?   the   train   of   thought   is   useless,   with   no   evidence   to   back   it   up.   ❝   let   the   man   hunt   begin,   i   guess.   ❞   a   piece   of   her   knows   it   will.   because   this   is   it—   a   town   forced   to   repeat   history   until   they   get   the   answer   right.   ❝   any   theories   in   your   head   ?   ❞

at   the   front   of   the   shop,   hana   flips   the   sign   from   'open'   to   'closed'.   if   they're   to   make   sense   of   this,   they'll   need   to   do   so   without   interruptions.   ❝   i'm   sure   your   cards   aren't   broken.   it   can   be   hard   to   do   a   good   self   reading   if   you've   got   all   of   this...   um,   stuff   looming   over   your   head.   harder   if   that   cards   aren't   saying   what   you   want   to   hear.   ❞   she   moves   toward   the   back   of   the   stop   to   her   reading   room,   draws   the   lace   curtain   to   the   side.   ❝   will   you   step   in   ?   we'll   figure   this   out. no sweat.   ❞

" uh , my car is parked just about a block down this way . " finger pointing straight ahead before quickly burrowing back into his pocket . walking in step next to her , he looked around . the town was quiet , seemingly peaceful . most people choosing to stay in their homes rather than venture out after dark , shattering the illusion of peace . but he didn't know what to do to break the eery silence . didn't know what to say that wouldn't lead to some kind of argument . " well , uh , did you have a fun night ? " awkward question for an awkward pair , but they made it to the squad car . a quick step in front of her , and grabbed the handle and held the door open for her .

                            for   the   first   time   in   years,   hana   is   thankful   for   the   size   of   the   town.   the   close   proximity   means   kaz   reaches   her   with   impressive   speed   ;   the   familiarity   has   her   sighing   in   relief.   as   she   walks   next   to   him,   she   pulls   the   jacket   tighter   around   her   torso.   the   air   between   them   feels   uncertain—   what   usually   is   filled   with   disagreements   &   tension   is   now   replaced   by   something   like   gratitude   &   security.   ❝   dunno   if   i'd   call   it   fun.   even   the   vodka   tastes   sad   tonight.   i   liked   the   music   though.   ❞   hana   sayoc,   who   could   make   conversation   with   a   brick   wall,   struggles   to   find   a   happy   medium   in   small   talk.   she   puffs   her   cheeks   with   air,   like   she's   trying   to   stop   the   apology   before   it   comes   out–   ❝   thanks   for   coming.   i'm   sorry   i   called,   i   just   wasn't   sure   who   else   would   answer.   ❞   she   slides   into   the   squad   care   with   ease.   her   chest   feels   lighter   to   be   in   it.   as   soon   as   he   takes   his   own   seat,   she   asks,   ❝   were   you   busy   ?   ❞

                             grievances   are   better   when   shared,   that's   something   he   should   remember.   in   a   town   like   red   creek,   it   seems   that   people   are   always   sharing   more   than   they   bargained   for.   even   at   a   time   like   this,   savannah's   words   carry   a   hidden   offer   to   share   the   burden.   everyone   forgets   a   name   at   some   point;   it   doesn't   make   santi   any   more   cruel   than   the   next.   ❝   i   know   it   can   happen,   it's   just—   a   reminder   of   how   much   harder   i'll   need   to   make   an   effort   around   town,   you   know   ?   ❞   with   this   doom   looming   over   their   heads,   it's   impossible   to   know   what   conversation   risks   being   the   last.   ❝   i   was   a   nurse,   i   know   life   is   fragile,   but   this—   ❞

                             there's   kindness   laced   in   the   voice   that   answers   his   call   to   no   one   in   particular.   (   to   anyone   who   would   listen,   is   more   like   it.   )   it   almost   has   him   breathing   in   a   sigh   of   relief.   someone   is   willing   to   hear   the   thought—   &   not   only   that,   they're   willing   to   mull   over   the   sentiment   with   him.   at   his   core,   santiago   knows   the   thought   is   ridiculous   to   hang   on   to.   red   creek   itself   surely   had   its   fair   share   of   apologies   to   pay   kirby;   a   forgotten   name   by   an   old   classmate   surely   fell   at   the   bottom   of   the   list.   he   nods,   finally.   ❝   sorry   to   you,   at   least.   of   all   the   things   people   could   seek   out   church   for—   ❞   he   pauses,   not   wanting   to   tilt   the   conversation   in   his   direction   again.   ❝   it's   hard   to   believe   something   so   fleeting   can   be   the   only   memory   that   sticks   with   you,   isn't   it   ?   never   knowing   our   last   goodbye,   that's... a lot.   ❞ to put it lightly.

cyrus ends up at the church due to his need to be involved, to be seen, and he knows that when tragedy strikes? there will always be people that take solace in the lord. and there are always people more willing to talk after a tragedy and cyrus is always willing to endear himself to new people for his own sake, for his own reputation. even in tragedy, perseverance is important, he thinks. he looks over at santi as he speaks, a sigh leaving his lips, "some people cane be your neighbor and still be a stranger. i'm sure she didn't hold it against you." or maybe she did. cyrus certainly didn't know kirby. "and i bet you never forgot after she told you, right? so i think you're settled up."

                      ❝   you’re   probably   right.   it’s   just…   what   came   to   mind,   which   doesn’t   seen   fair   to   her.   ❞   he   must   be   right,   is   the   thing.   surely   kirby   had   more   things   to   worry   about   than   a   guy   from   high   school   forgetting   her   name.   still—   head   tilts   in   their   direction   to   give   the   new   guest   his   full   attention.   everyone   in   red   creek   is   sure   to   be   seen   &   heard   by   him   from   now   on.   he’ll   commit   every   face,   name,   &   voice   to   memory.   no   more   forgetting,   not   when   life   itself   proves   to   be   so   fragile.   ❝   sorry—   this   should   definitely   not   be   about   my   problems.   ❞
