Envy Black Star is standing in for the role of Death the Kid as the son of a death god and Maka is his romance obsessed weapon. They don't actually *need* a partner to be super powerful, so having one is a choice.

Headcanon from WDGK, when Maka's soul perception first activated, Maka was able to see and talk to Asura. She called him the Basement Man and talked of him often with her parents like a kid would do with an imaginary friend. Spirit was more insistent on arranging playdates after that.

Rather than have any animal as a familiar, Chrona has plants. They have a special interest in poisonous and toxic flowers. Though I usually have them using roses in their magic.

Chrona's family is full of evil women that refuse to help them. Though for DoM I did have Arachnae pretend to be kind to get Chrona to stay. What she wanted was to get her son Ragnarok out of Chrona's body by any means necessary. That was why she needed Noah's help to separate the two souls. It ended up hurting both of them.

Soul and Tsubaki's friendship was really fun to explore. i really enjoy writing about them bonding over how bone headed and impulsive their partners are.
