Everything about this is wrong.
Let’s start with Joe Jonas- Are you seriously commending him for not breaking up with her via text message? I guess that’s what defines a gentleman in this day. Classy. As for Camilla, “actress” rhymes with “mattress,” and it’s punny. She doesn’t condemn her for being “better known for the things that she does on the mattress.” She’s condemning her for ruining her relationship with Joe. It’s not slut shaming. Stop being so sensitive! And who cares what her songs are about. Music is her art, and art is the most personal thing to a person. Her songs are her therapy and her diary. She’s a young woman so obviously she’s going to write about the heartbreak she’s experiencing. Maybe you’d prefer she write songs not about people or experiences, but about emotions like John Mayer.
Speaking of John Mayer, I’ve got some things to say about those statements too. No one really knows what happened with him other than them. Who are we to speculate what their relationship was or is? “Dear John” isn’t her kicking him when he was down. It was her reconciling her own feelings about him. Hindsight is 20/20, you know? She’s trying to work through her own emotions.
Admittedly, I only knew part of the story of “Mean,” and didn’t know it was specifically about Bob Lefsetz, but let’s think about this for a minute. First of all, everyone sounds bad live. I don’t care who you are, you do not sound like your record live, and if you say you do, you’re lying to yourself. And he didn’t just say she was bad. He said “How awful was she? Dreadful.” He posed the question of if she’d killed her career with that performance, and argues that she did. Here’s a couple of my favorite quotes from his review:
In one fell swoop, Taylor Swift consigned herself to the dustbin of teen phenoms.
Taylor’s too young and dumb to understand the mistake she made.
It’s hard to be a singer if you can’t sing.
Taylor Swift shortened her career last night.
In what world is it okay for a grown man to call a 20 year old girl “too young and dumb”? And in what world is it not okay for her to stand up for herself? For a website full of people preaching about feminism, you are hypocrites! You should be exalting her for defending herself. Instead you’re condemning her for not taking verbal abuse. And you know what? “Mean” is an anthem for kids who feel like shit all over. Who cares how it came to be?
Next is what? Michael J Fox? Okay, all I’m going to say about this is that you can’t judge a celebrity by how their fans act. And I’ll add, that was a dick thing of MJF to say. And they’ve resolved it so drop it, maybe?
And here we go with Harry Styles. Basically everything about this is wrong. Okay, this is a gossip site, plain and simple. They don’t even cite their sources, even vaguely. Whatever on that one, I guess. Moving on to the Grammys. The central argument of this section is what? Their relationship was faked for publicity? Okay. Going with that, the break up was also for publicity, right? Obviously she’s going to milk it for all it’s worth. That’s what you do with a publicity stunt. Your argument just shot itself in the foot.
Lastly, I’m so sick of people saying Taylor is a slap in the face to feminism, or setting women back fifty years. Isn’t the point of feminism being able to do whatever the fuck I want? That’s what she’s doing. She’s giving herself agency through her lyrics to do whatever she wants. She’s allowed to be emotional and irrational. She’s not setting anything back, and everyone who thinks she is clearly isn’t paying attention.
She’s not encouraging bad behavior, bulling or slut shaming. She’s not evading responsibility for her own actions. She’s encouraging young girls to stand up for themselves against bullies (“Mean”). She’s forgiving those who have wronged her (“Innocent,” “Holy Ground”). She’s taking responsibility (“Dear John,” “All Too Well,” “Back to December”).
Listen, I’m not Taylor Swift’s biggest fan, but mindlessly bashing her is not okay. Posts like this are what is setting feminism back. Taylor is a young girl whose lyrics are personal. She doesn’t use other writers because her emotions are real. She isn’t perfect, and I’m not saying we should excuse that, but we also shouldn’t pick apart everything she does.
