The rally has wound down, and its participants exiting, as Amon himself steps away from the microphone and backstage. His closest are quietly but bracingly congratulating him on another job well done. There are sure to be more followers after this, they say. This was one of Amon’s best successes yet, they insist. 

Amon casts his gaze back out into the now empty warehouse for a moment, only half-listening, before turning back and saying, “You go on ahead. I want to check something.” 

They blink, but don’t argue. The others nod and encourage Amon not to be too long—there’s new followers waiting for him, after all—before departing. When Amon is sure they’ve left, he returns onto the stage and says into the room, “I know you’re there.” 

                    this  was  stupid.   perhaps  the  dumbest  plan  mako  has  ever  created  in  all  of  his  eighteen  years  of  living.   the  look  of  absolute  fear  concealing  the  entirety  of  bolin’s  face  haunted  him  to  this  day.   he  was  almost  too  late  in  protecting  the  one  individual  he  swore  he  would  to  his  final  breath.   yeah,   he’d  admit  he  was  not  thinking  clearly.   he  was  being  irrational.   but  anyone  would  do  what  mako  was  doing  right  now.

                   his  breath  hitched  in  his  throat.   had  he  been  too  loud?   how  long  had  amon  sensed  his  presence?   perhaps  he  wasn’t  as  slick  as  he  expected.   then  again,   the  firebender  did  not  put  much  thought  into  planning  this  out.   there  was  no  way  he’d  be  able  to  take  this  man  out  alone.   this  was  not  his  destiny.   but  he  could  not  turn  tail  now.   this  man  had  taken  too  much.
