ACE-4-ACE EKUREI
My (veryyyy late) piece for the final prompt of the 2025 Ekurei Week -- Ace Representation! Yayyy I’m finally caught up and done! 🥳
Reigen bringing up the split-attraction-model to Dimple and then immediately going “never mind I don’t want to talk about this with you” and that’s the end of it is in the rankings for funniest sleeper moment in the series.
In general, "character who is in unrequited love with another character who is very aromantic and is just, like, normal about it" is a dynamic that I am obsessed with and nobody ever writes, for reasons that are perhaps obvious but still disappoint me.
Ships where I feel very strongly that this is the dynamic at play:
Serizawa & Reigen (Mob Psycho 100)
Gimli & Legolas (Lord of the Rings)
Kabru & Laios (Dungeon Meshi)
Rutherford & Tendi (Star Trek: Lower Decks)
Talking with Scribe about how Reigen definitely has ADHD, and I know that whole the conversation around mental health and mental disorders is wildly different in Japan, so out of curiosity I started doing some research on it and I have come to. A discovery.
Prior to 2007, the most common medication prescribed for ADHD symptoms in Japan was Ritalin--which was technically not approved to for children (and it was and remains fairly difficult to get an adult ADHD diagnosis) but still ended up getting prescribed to them occasionally if they were in serious need of them. However, due to heavily increasing regulations on stimulant medications, access to Ritalin prescriptions dropped sharply from 2007-2008, and a lot of people were kicked off their prescriptions.
Reigen opened Spirits & Such when he was 23 years old after spontaneously quitting his boring sales job. Given that he's 28 years old for the majority of the series, which takes place in 2012, that means that he must have opened the agency sometime in 2007-2008.
Conclusion:
Okay, I put this off for several days because of life stuff, and just…everything happening so much, all the time, always. But I’m actually in a unique position to talk about this, because I was living in Japan in 2010-2011 (so right between Ritalin becoming restricted and the events of Mob Psycho taking place), and I was actively pursuing ADHD treatment at the time. So lemme give you a little insight on what Reigen would have been dealing with and how much it would have SUCKED.
So when I first got offered a job in Japan, I asked the recruiter what I should do about my ADHD medicine. His answer? “You either figure out how to do without it, or you don’t go to Japan.” I chose the former option.
A couple months into my extremely stressful eikaiwa job, and I was STRUGGLING. The manager of my school took me to see an English-speaking doctor, and I mentioned the intense anxiety and overwhelm I’d been dealing with. I asked him if he could prescribe me Ritalin…and he told me he’d literally never heard of it before.
He looked it up in his little physician’s desk reference, read the entry, and said: “Absolutely not. This is only for narcolepsy.” (Which, fair enough—if you were having problems with randomly falling asleep, stimulants would definitely wake you the fuck up.) Then he saw that the recommended dosage was 10 mg (insanely low, for those who don’t know), and asked how much I used to take. I said 20 mg, and he scoffed, “My god, Americans take so much medicine!”
I broke down crying. “What am I supposed to do without stimulants?” I asked.
He looked me in the eye and said, very sternly: “Nipponnomad. To be healthy in your body and your mind—it is you DUTY.”
Shockingly, shaming me into not being ADHD anymore did not work. I begged him for a referral to a psychiatric clinic. He initially refused. “No,” he said. “You will be so uncomfortable and scared there. It will be full of schizophrenics.”
“Schizophrenics don’t scare me,” I told him.
With a look of profound incredulity, he wrote me a referral to a psychiatric clinic.
A few days later, I had my appointment with a psychiatrist. He was extremely kind, but spoke no English. My Japanese was really shit at the time, but I managed to convey to him that I had ADHD and wanted stimulant meds.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I do know what ADHD is, but I’m not allowed to prescribe stimulants.”
He wrote me two prescriptions instead. One was for 50 mg of Zoloft, which was the most he felt comfortable giving me. The other was for benzos.
“Holy shit,” you might be saying. “Aren’t benzos way more dangerous and potentially addictive than properly-managed stimulants?”
They sure are. Especially the one I was prescribed, which has such high potential for addiction that it is actually illegal in the United States! But it was much easier, by Japanese law, to prescribe me THAT than it was to give me even 10 mg of Ritalin.
Months later, I had a performance evaluation at work. My manager—the one who’d originally taken me to the English-speaking doctor—marked me down in just one category.
“I had to,” she explained, “because you didn’t tell me from the beginning that you have brain problems.”
In conclusion, being ADHD in Japan in the era in which Mob Psycho takes place was a demoralizing, humiliating hell-ride, and Reigen might not even have dared to tell anyone, for fear of social and professional repercussions.
Epilogue: I was recently talking to a friend of mine who still teaches over there, and I asked him if attitudes toward ADHD have changed at all in recent years.
“You’re not gonna like this,” he told me, “but ADHD is still basically a slur.”

I was vaguely aware that aro/ace Reigen headcanons were, like, as much of a thing in fandom as these things ever are (which is to say, not very, but but also not unheard of) but the more I learn about him the more I'm like oh. Oh that is absolutely what is going on with that man.
This is not an alloromantic answer to that question sir!!!!
Related and unrelated to last post I recently did a deep dive back through my mob psycho 100 sideblog I ran as a teenager and was hit by a lot of unexpected feelings.
There's this narrative that was especially peddled in the 2017-ish ace discourse era that a lot of teenagers and young aspecs would grow out of it and eventually realize they were playing pretend straight or whatever. The mob psycho fandom especially was hit with this weird ace discourse war where people got *really* aggressive about (especially) asexual headcanons and a lot of bad faith arguments were thrown around about it. Being visibly aspec in that fandom at the time guaranteed you'd have a target on your back. I think despite knowing a lot of it was bullshit that part of my life and the constant harassment me and my aspec peers faced at the time is something I'll probably carry with me for a long time. Diving back into that blog made me realize how much that time influences the way I view and present myself on online platforms to this day.
That is to say that despite everything, I felt the tiniest bit healed seeing how many of my mutuals and familiar faces grew up and are still visibly aspec! I know this is such a 'no duh' moment but I have to emphasize how moving it was for me after years of people saying its fake! Seeing real evidence that the rhetoric was wrong and that people are still living their lives vocally like that.
Living your truth is real. Don't let people trying to tear you down win.
aroace reigen stans rise up!!
[ID: A digital comic of Reigen Arataka from Mob Psycho 100.
The first panel is Reigen leaning back in his desk chair with a self-satisfied smile. He says "Eh, you want advice on how to ask a girl out, Mob? Of course, I know aaall about that."
Behind him we see the inner Reigen who is clasping a hand over his mouth, looking anxious and sweating profusely. He is clutching the ace and aro flags in his left hand and thinking "Shit what do I tell him, I have no clue..."
Next panel is Reigen turning around looking desperate and thinking "well surely Serizawa-"
His thought is then interrupted by the next panel which shows Serizawa smiling brightly and saying "I've never liked a girl in my life!" surrounded by sparkles. Behind him Reigen can only watch in faint horror, thinking "WE'RE FUCKED." end ID.]

don’t you know what you want to be, mob?
That one Series of Unfortunate Events quote
[ID: A Mob Psycho 100 comic. Muraki gestures to Sakurai, who's glaring and surrounded by an ominous red-black aura while holding up a sword, and says, "You must understand-- he had a terrible childhood." Mob stares at him, dead-eyed, and replies, "Yes, I understand. I'm having a terrible childhood right now." Reigen is lying twisted behind him in the Family Guy Death pose. End ID]
Why I see Reigen as asexual
This is a very self-indulgent post, but it's his birthday today and I wanted to compile all the things about Reigen that make me see him as a fellow ace.
Please don't take this list too seriously! None of these are This Is Canon signs and some of them are just jokes. Also, it's pretty hard to find evidence of asexuality barring a character explicitly saying "hey i never feel sexual attraction" so bear with ne here.
1. That Scene With Dimple
Yeah, we all know the scene.
"But does love always have to come with sexual desires?" -Reigen Arataka
This is what almost asexual person asks at some point. It's just such an asexual quote. Society often conflates the two things as inherently hand-in-hand, but that's not true for everyone!
