Johnny Cash at Folsom and San Quentin - Photographs by Jim Marshall
Coming soon!
Johnny Cash at Folsom and San Quentin: Photographs by Jim Marshall
A Powerful Portrait of a Legendary Musician, by a Legendary Photographer.
Featuring over 70 photographs and curated with full access to the Jim Marshall Archive, this volume offers the definitive view of Johnny Cashâs prison concerts at Folsom in 1968 and San Quentin in 1969. Cash had been interested in recording a live album at a prison since his 1955 hit, âFolsom Prison Bluesâ. The idea was put on hold for a few years until 1968, when Cash visited one of Californiaâs oldest maximum security prisons to record his âAt Folsom Prisonâ album. Cash had known Jim Marshall since the early 1960s and personally requested him to record the prison concert. Marshall was granted unlimited access.
Backed by June Carter, Carl Perkins and the Tennessee Three, Cash performed two shows at Folsom. The resulting album was a hit in the United States, and reached Number One on the country charts and the top 15 of the national album chart. Its popularity revitalized Cashâs career and led to a follow up album, âAt San Quentinâ the following year. Again, Marshall was personally invited to document the concert. âSan Quentinâ became Cashâs first album to hit Number One on the pop charts, and both it and its predecessor remain two of the biggest selling live albums of all time.
From arriving off the bus outside the imposing prison walls, to shaking hands with prisoners (including Glen Sherley, who wrote the song âGreystone Chapelâ sung by Cash), and performing until sweat dripped down his forehead, Marshall captured the passion, authority and intimacy of Cashâs performances. His âJC Flippinâ the bird at San Quentin prisonâ has become one of the most iconic photographs of the twentieth century, coming about when Marshall proposed: âJohn, letâs do a shot for the warden.â
Johnny Cash was one of Jim Marshallâs favourite subjects and you can see this in his photographs from Folsom and San Quentin. This body of work showcases some of the most arresting photographs of the country music star ever taken.

PEACE A Jim Marshall Project
"Photographer Jim Marshall tracked the meteoric rise of the peace symbol between 1961 and 1968, capturing its mobility and increasing pervasiveness in American culture. Now, for the first time, Marshall's decade-long personal project of sumptuous black-and-white street photography, where the symbol is the star, is compiled in a book, PEACE: Photographs by Jim Marshall". The Week These photographs of banners and graffiti on subway walls perfectly capture the evolution of the âPeaceâ symbol, from its origins as Gerald Holtomâs 1958 symbol for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, to it being embraced by the youth culture of America, and becoming the universally recognised symbol for Peace.Â
