Writing may be hard, but the JOY of getting to expand the characters and worlds that you come up with can never be replaced. Keep going, even when it gets hard.

The specific pain of having the perfect sentence arrive in your head at the exact moment you cannot write it down. driving. shower. falling asleep. never at the desk. never when the document is open. i have lost more good sentences to the gap between the bed and the phone than i have ever actually written.

Something nobody prepares you for is that the better you get at writing the harder it becomes. beginners write freely because they don't know enough to know what's wrong. then you learn. and suddenly you can see every single flaw in real time as you're making it and you have to write anyway while your own brain is in the corner going "that's a weak verb. that transition is lazy. you've used that word three times." getting good at this is mostly just getting better at ignoring yourself.

Another kind of diversity we need in writing is protagonists without love interests. Give me adults with full-fledged stories that don't include falling in love.

writing after a long break is basically not remembering the timeline and having to scroll up 17 times to check, suddenly remembering a small detail that is important and end up searching for it for 30 minutes, scrolling up 56 times to make sure everything still makes sense in the story, the urge to give up, and the eventual "I'm just going to let my future self suffer editing this"

They taught us in physics that an object in motion stays in motion unless something acts on it and i didn't care at the time but as a writer i think about this constantly. your character cannot just stop. something has to stop them. something external, something internal, something that costs them. a person doesn't change direction for no reason. a story doesn't either. newton was writing craft advice and nobody told him.

I'm perfectly fine with people criticizing my favorite stories and frequently do it myself but can you stop being so boring about it

"This scene made me so uncomfortable" given the subject matter, it would be really, really badly written if it wasn't.

sad when you go back to dismantle an earlier draft for parts and encounter a section that's both entirely obsolete and maybe one of the loveliest passages you've ever written
