Japanese designer/artist Sebastian Masuda of 6%DOKIDOKI has released a statement (read it here in English) on the similarities between his body of kawaii work and some of the recent items released by legendary Japanese fashion brand Comme Des Garcons. His statement is an acknowledgement of the similarities, a reflection on the fact that his work has been influential on some of the world’s most important designers, and a call for dialogue - and maybe even future collaborations. Sebastian has been considering how to respond to the Comme Des Garcons “kawaii” work since several of his fans brought it to his attention. It’s refreshing to see that he chose to open a constructive dialogue and is trying to build something positive. Rather than seeing two of Harajuku’s most internationally recognized creators (Sebastian Masuda and Rei Kawakubo) in conflict, we are offered the amazing dream of a possible future collaboration between the two.
