jason’s fingers idly traced absent shapes and lines across leo’s arm as they lay tangled up together in the quiet of the cabin. it was early morning. the sun had yet to be pulled past the horizon. on certain nights, jason hardly ever slept. he’d stay up to watch leo sleep just like this—lips slightly parted, curls a bit of a mess, dressed up in pajama pants and jason’s sweatshirt.

By that alone, Nathaniel knew it was one of his better mornings. Amidst the suffering and the pain, there were still moments when it was just this. Bickering like the teenagers they were. Nathaniel still believed it was all they would've been had Riko left his delusions of Perfect Court alone. Something told him he would've been made this way no matter what changed. The Nest was like that. Picking apart everything good about who you were as person to leave behind the bad. Exy used to be his safe place. Now it was a prison.

"Whenever you feel like it," Nathaniel said. "The longer it gets, the more of an inconvenience it'll be. They'll be able to grab your hair. It doesn't have to be short like Kevin's."
