Something very hard to come to terms with as an enjoyer of 19th century literature is that many of your favorite characters, even if not stated, may be understood to have a moustache. Sometimes itβs even stated.

if you're looking for something to read that discusses the topics i mentioned in the chapter on malaysia from the ussr (until i can write down the name of it lol) i recommend looking for the other book i quoted "racism & racial discrimination in malaysia" by kua kia soong, it's a more recently published book so it should be easier to find a copy, i bought mine in malaysia so i know it can be found locally & the author is malaysian
the author talks about the stoking of racism in malaysia as a colonial policy that the local bourgeoisie have continued to carry out post-independence because it benefits malaysian capitalism and imperialism as a world system, talks about how ketuanan melayu / malay nationalism has not improved the living conditions of the vast majority of malays and kept them in poverty and how much work malay capitalists have put into funneling any kind of malay class consciousness into reactionary ethno-nationalism to secure their own positions, the deep bonds our bourgeoisie have with foreign capital and how that has harmed working class malaysians, the scapegoating of indian and chinese working class malaysians and the opportunist capitalists in our communities taking advantage of our marginalization, the split between malaysia and singapore being a failure to reconcile the contradictions of race and class in the region, the racism against migrant workers and refugees, etc. it's the first book i read about malaysia that made me feel less insane lol
