Who is Tad Carruthers is the wrong question. Who? Who indeed. What is Tad Carruthers? Now that is the question you should be asking. Tad Carruthers is not just a person. Tad Carruthers is a state of being: Tad Carruthers is that moment when you stand beside a desk, a hand hovering, about to actually cuff someone, but never accomplishing that task. Your hand sits on the end of your arm like an animal apart from yourself, a perching victim of inertia gone BONK. Tad Carruthers means to move; he longs to move, possibly, but he is only this: an action that never happens, a line of dialog that ultimately means nothing. What is Tad Carruthers? We have all been Tad Carruthers. You may be Tad Carruthers now.

Don’t apologize for asking. Have I answered this before? Maybe. Will I answer it again? Probably. This is the question that I have, on some level, always been asking myself.
