BACKSTORY:

Elizabeth Schuyler was, originally, the youngest child of the ruling family. She was raised to be second best. Always behind her older sister, Cellina, always inferior to her older brother, Gianni. The baby of the family and the apple of her father’s eye, until her sister reached marrying age and her brother went off to war. She was kind. She was good. Sheltered and kept pure, never told of the horrors in the world. Her fair skin stayed fair as her brother’s darkened amidst the blood and sun on the battle field and her sister’s skin grew pock marked and grey with illness and disease.

Elizabeth was allowed the luxury of roaming where she please as all eyes were on the firsts. She snuck away to the streets of the poorest parts of town, handing out leftovers from banquets. She spirited over the walls of the terrace to the meadows and vineyards or to the depths of the woods. The world wasn’t perfect, but nature was. Society said she was less than human, but Mother Nature said she was equal. Her sister and brother, her mother and father, were blind to the simple truth of the natural world; Elizabeth was blind to society.

The plague took her sister as suddenly as it appeared on her fair skin. Suddenly Elizabeth wasn’t third anymore. She was Second. Now she was poked and prodded and prepared to make a good match and an even better alliance, if they could find one anyway. They didn’t. Though her father was at one point a just man, he had begun to spiral into a greedy shell of himself; the war that had originally been about defending himself became a conquest. A mildly successful one, too, until one night when Gianni fell ill as well. Her father descended into madness at an exponential rate as his son progressed towards the grave.

Elizabeth because distraught over her brother’s illness, spending day and night by his bed, praying that the mysterious illness go away. That her father would become sane again. Her prayers fell on deaf ears. Though she maintains her hope and her cunning wits, she grows increasingly anxious over her father’s condition. She yearns for a way to end her father’s reign, with no solution in sight and no way of taking over as the head of the family due to her sex.

The lone child and survivor of her Father’s war and the illnesses of the world, Elizabeth Schuyler is still only a child. But she is determined to change her world.
