Evatroit had laughed at him: "You? A man? You would die of a cold within the afternoon if they let you out of sight of!" She had said.

Daris had turned red. He didn't want to accept it, and so they made a bet.

"If I survive a day in the woods, you'll never call me a boy again! And certainly not clinen-wet! (Kline used to be a typical Greek bed)

Eva had just chuckled "You say I should lie?"

At that, he turned red again, but this time with anger. He ran into a forest and stayed there.

Until the heat of the sun had vanished, and the cold of the night had fallen in, the boy Daris, on the tallest tree he could find, had found a seat and had waited until the storm in his stomach would fly away, and the redness would leave his face. The fearless idiot - or the scaredy-cat, because he didn't know which of the two had prevailed at that time, had convinced him that a night in the tree would be the best way to convince Eva of the opposite. He wanted to spend not only the day, but also the night. And when the day had dawned, he hoped to find out where he had just been. And maybe he could have seen the way home better, on that starless night.

The little boy Daris, and at that moment he was sure that he was nothing but a little boy, had descended. He had turned his tear-dresst face to heaven and prayed with rattling teeth to God. He had asked him to find his home safely. With stiff fingers he had climbed down piece by piece, branch by branch. He almost fell when he slipped, but he got to grab a branch. He hadn't been strong enough to hold him, but the small, light Daris was able to hold on and regain his balance before the branch broke away from the tree with a tack.

His frozen fingers had only reluctantly released the severed branch. It had fallen dull to the ground not far from his feet.

Slowly he had gone to his knees and had felt himself piece by bit, until he had felt the ground under his feet after an eternity.

He almost screamed with joy, but he pulled himself together. Instead, he went to his knees. He rubbed his hands together and had blown into his palms with trembling lips.

So the confused little boy had set off to find out where he was.

He had descended from the tree and ran aimlessly around, hoping to find out of the forest and then hoping to find a place known to him to come home from there. At that moment, he had been ready to blackmail a wolf, if only it could have told him where his safe, warm home was. He had eagerly searched for a way or a wolf, but it seemed as if the fog had been brought down from the sky only to place it over Dari's eyes. And if it had been true that the wolves could show him the way, they would all have disappeared for that night.

He took a tired step in front of the others. Although he had already spent hours in the darkness, he could not see much. Neither did the stars want to be signposts today, nor did they want to illuminate his way.

The fog was not only over his eyes, he had also crept into his head and did not let him rest until he closed his eyes.

He wrapped his arms around his body, as if he could repel the whipping winds.

With every step he took, he seemed to get caught in the ball of wool of the forest. From above the branches hung down on him, staring him small with glances as sharp as blades. Under him, the broken branches were just waiting for him to fall into their trap to wrap themselves around his leg.

He exhaled tremblingly, forcing his heart again not to jump out of his chest and took a step. He knew he was going to fall, got ready for the case - and arrived safely on the ground with his foot.

The earth under his feet was at every step proof of a miracle that the long arms of the trees had not yet grasped him and drawn him into the ground.

He wiped the dirt with one of his muddy palms and made nothing better with it.

His head throbbed, he hadn’t felt a tingle in his feet for a long time. The night smelled of cold clouds and wet wood.

Panting and groaning, he tried to get up, when he noticed that his leg had become entangled in a root that had found its way out of the earth and had been pulled down again right after. "Are you the dear gentleman who is in charge of my case?" He asked politely as he freed himself, but only incoherent sounds escaped his lips.

He had to laugh at his own words and lay down on his back, but the laugh was quickly replaced by a pained expression on his face. His heard hammered in his chest, but it felt as weak as the flutter of a butterfly.

He tried to focus on something else, to forget about the gut-twisting feeling of such beating heart. He turned to his hearing. He pressed his ear so close to the ground, that he could heard irregular rumble on the floor. An animal must have been hunting nearby.

It was supposed to make him feel restless, make him falter, but he didn't feel any of it. He took a deep breath, facing the sky. On that starless autumn night, the fear of wild animals had left him once and for all.

He was too exhausted to fear for his life, too exhausted to leave, and his heart too tired to keep beating up to his throat.

Again, he pressed his ear to the ground. The running was no longer audible.

He would worry about his now completely mud-soaked Peplos later, instead he stopped.

In the freezing night, only the mud under him felt a bit of pity for him.

It tingled warmly on his skin, seemed to pull him into a pleasant embrace, and caressed him, gently as one would pet a cat, and cradle little child to sleep.

First, the exhaustion fell off his shoulders like a dirty crust that had only been waiting for it to be removed. Then it scraped out of the gaps between his ribs, flowed out along his back. It worked her way down to his legs, in which the feeling, that they actually belonged to him came back hesitantly. The sizzling feeling of numbness disappeared, leaving a pleasant tingling.

In the distance, he registered the race again. Some quick steps. Break. Three, four slow steps. Break. Fast, short steps. Break.

He exhaled, every corner in which the exhaustion was hidden, had been stirred up.

Finally, the mud reached his eyes.

The effort, every muscle that painstakingly kept his eyes open, paused; he closed his eyes. Before he knew it, he slipped into a sleep that he would never experience before and never after.

He listened to the silence of the forest. In the distance he heard an owl — the sun was at the epitome of rising and bringing some light into the darkness. At least he hoped so, because there was still not a single star in the sky. Even the brightest signpost in the north was too shy. He hid behind the thick cloud cover with all the other stars.

The footsteps came closer and closer. They were fast. Firm. Targeted.

Before he could rub his eyes with his dirty hands, he realized it. Firm steps came towards him.

With a stiff neck and fear in his eyes, he turned around.

"Gotcha." she pushed out between two strong breaths. Her chest rose and fell from running.

"Evatroit?" Daris was too agitated to act offended. "What are you doing here?"

"Your mother was beside herself with worry."

Mother. He had forgotten how much she was constantly worried. "Did you tell-" he took a sharp breath. Black dots entered his field of vision. He got to grab a tree trunk somewhere and leaned on it. "Did you tell her where I am?" He asked breathlessly.

"Of course not! She would have fallen with worry! I told her you were at Gideon's house." she took a step towards him "Look at you. Were you chased through the mud by the wolves, or what was going on?”

Daris was about to give a biting answer, but a look on her face was enough to let every thought in his head evaporate. Her eyebrows were slightly furrowed. She looked, as if she could see with a look into his eyes, how he had been feeling, all alone in the forest.

"My goodness. You got lost, didn't you?” She took a step closer and looked at his dirty face. Her eyes moved up and stopped over his eyes. She raised her hand and her countless bracelets hit each other, making rattling sounds. When she lowered her arm again, she triumphantly held up a small branch. Her mouth opened as if she wanted to say something, but her gaze fell on his dirty Peplos.

Daris swallowed. He was dizzy, his legs heavy. He could do nothing but look at Eva, follow her movements. She stretched out her colorfully decorated hand, and the sound produced by the clinking metal calmed him in an oblique way.

"Let's go home."

"I...can't."

Eva turned her head to the side "What keeps you here?", Something in her gaze changed. She swallowed, looked down at her feet "Are you still mad at me?" She asked softly. “I went too far. Excuse me," she added, but she couldn't bring herself to look up from the ground.

Meanwhile, Daris struggled with the dizziness. Because of the black spots, he couldn't see Eva for a long time. He let go of the tree trunk — a mistake, because his hand could not be found back to it. He stumbled forward blindly. "I don’t feel so good." he croaked with a trembling voice.

Evatroit managed to catch him with a huff. She quickly clamped her arm under his and supported him. She put the free back of her hand to his forehead "For God's sake, Daris, you have a fever!"

"Fever?" Daris mumbled in confusion, "No, just cold. So cold.”

Eva swayed under his weight as she groaned trying to keep him up

"Let's go home," Evatroit repeated.

"I don't know." Daris frowned, barely managing to keep his eyes open, "I don't know where we are."

"Then I'll help you. Please stay awake, okay?

"Hmmm"

"Are you ready?"

Daris nodded.

Slowly they took the first step. His breathing went shallow, fast. Beads of sweat had already built on his forehead.

Evatroit was thinking about what to distract him when Dari's eyes closed after a heavy fight and he fell to the ground with a dull sound.

"Damn it all.“ Eva breathed as she looked down at his pale face.

Tears burned in her eyes. It's all my fault, she thought, but didn't dare to say out loud.

With stiff limbs and a running nose, she scrambled to her feet and pulled him onto her back, surprisingly with ease — not because of her physical strength, but because of the concern for him, and the fear all alone in the forest outweighed his dead weight by far.

All alone, she picked him up and put his arms over her shoulders. All alone, she got up from the squat. Her limbs were stiff from the cold, and she feared that the biting winds would hit an eternal home in her bones if they didn't leave the woods soon.

Where she got all the strength to carry him, she didn't know.

She tightened her grip on Dari's limp, glowing body, ignoring her trembling legs that threatened to collapse under the weight. She took a sure step, feeling his feverish breath on her shoulder, and forbade herself to go any further thoughts. "Daris? Please stay awake, yeah?” She asked, with stiff, cold fingers.

She didn't get an answer.
