Why #gamergate is important
Fun fact: Morgan Ramsay, founder of the Entertainment Media Counsel, did an objective study of how much of gaming journalism talks about sexism or social justice.
To do this, he downloaded 130,524 articles from 37 RSS feeds of 23 outlets, including The Escapist, Rock Paper Shotgun, CVG, Edge Online, Eurogamer, Gamasutra, Game Informer, GamePolitics, GamesBeat, GamesIndustry International, GameSpot, GamesRadar, IGN, IndieGames, Joystiq, Kotaku, Massively, MCV, NowGamer, PocketGamer.biz, Polygon, Shacknews and VG24/7, published over a period of twelve months. He then did a search on how often these games articles mentioned sexism, feminism, or misogyny.
The result? Over a period of one year, 0.41% of 130,524 articles referenced feminism, feminist, sexism, sexist, misogyny, and misogynist explicitly.
Thatâs less than half of one percent.
So next time you hear someone whining that âfeminism is taking over video games journalismâ, what theyâre actually whining about is that feminism exists in video games journalism.
My Thoughts This Morning on GamerGate
My Thoughts This Morning on GamerGate
Actually, the first of these are from last night, in the wake of learning that game developer Brianna Wu was threatened out of her home:
Jesus. Brianna Wu is someone I consider a friend. Fuck everyone who thinks GamerGate is anything other than haters shitting on women.

I now believe the most dangerous time for a woman with online visibility is the point at which others are seen to be listening, âfollowingâ, âlikingâ, âfavoritingâ, retweeting. In other words, the point at which her readers have (in the trollâs mind) âdrunk the Koolaidâ. Apparently, that just canât be allowed. From the haterâs POV, you (the Koolaid server) do not âdeserveâ that attention. You are âstealingâ an audience. From their angry, frustrated point of view, the idea that others listen to you is insanity.

The 2014 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to Pakistani Malala Yousafzai and Indian Kailash Satyarthi for âtheir struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.â "âŚ
This is just the most recent of countless similar messages I have received because of my Wonder Woman costumes. I am so tired of white, white passing, and anti-Black people from any and all ethnic backgrounds and nationalities looking at me in my costume and telling me âYou donât deserve to wear that. Wonder Woman isnât for Black people.â
Itâs nothing to do with âaccuracyâ, itâs racism and Iâm sick of it. In before âOh but they just didnât know about Nubia!!â Please. You can try to use ignorance as an excuse but you have to ask yourself, even if these people donât know there IS a Black Wonder Woman, what makes them feel like they have the right to tell Black people what they can and cannot do? What gives them this supposed authority over our imaginations and our desire to create? This mentality is the reason why so many potential cosplayers of color are afraid to even wear a costume. I can and have sent these people panels, pages and issues of official DC comics full of images of Black Wonder Women (yes, there are more than one!) and it doesnât matter to them. My skin is still too dark, my nose too broad, my hair too nappy, in their words, not mine. I have been told to my face that I disgrace the Wonder Woman costume with my Blackness. Many other people of color have gone through similar experiences. I know of only one way for us to combat this. Create, design, display and wear whatever we damn well please. Let our differences enhance our art. Let every single privileged individual who thinks to question our rights to self expression choke on their words. Feel free to be yourself in whatever way you see fit. Do not let other peopleâs opinions of your race or ethnicity dictate your choices. Donât let the way they see you have anything to do with who you are.Â
Strong, important words from a lovely and wise lady.

BREAKING: Malala Yousafzai Wins Nobel Peace Prize
Malala, now 17, was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman two years ago in her home country of Pakistan after coming to prominence for her campaigning for education for girls.
She won for what the Nobel committee called her âheroic struggleâ for girlsâ right to an education.
She is the youngest ever winner of the prize. (x)
