“What are you thinking?” Jyn asked.

He brought her hand up to his lips, and kissed each knuckle as he thought how best to answer her question. He thought of her, of when they first met, of Jedha, Scarif, Yavin, Hoth–he found his courage in the ice carven tunnels of Echo Base, when Jyn pressed her whole arm against his, and in his head he had a plan of how to ask her, but all that came out was, “Jyn?”

“Yes?” she asked back, her smile invisible to everyone else but him.

His answer was to take her arm in his and leaned down to kiss her. A half moment passed when the rational side of his brain rang out every alarm, but then Jyn grabbed the back of his neck to anchor herself against him, and then every alarm was silenced so he could enjoy the moment.

Cassian looked at her when he kissed her ring finger, felt the impulse of the question on the tip of his tongue. They had only officially been together for a few months, but he had known her for years. When he sat through the wedding and turned to see Jyn with tears in her eyes as she watched Leia walk down the aisle, he thought that maybe she would like that someday.

Then the bouquet fell in his hands, and he realized that maybe he would want that someday too.
