I have absolutely nothing to do but to listen so please go ahead
okay so…in the gimmick authority, the detective is easily the sweetest, objectively nice person (i polled this back when i started the blog). he’s also been through childhood neglect, peer pressure, countless comparisons to his beloved ‘perfect’ brother…who then died on a ship with the judge (another authority member) and her girlfriend. he’s been pushed to the sidelines because of - and by - someone who he loved, who then died and left him and his family completely broken. then his family died, and he was left magically bonded with two random strangers and the sole survivor of the accident that killed his brother. he’s been forced into more uncomfortable situations than he’d want to admit, but he still grew to love his new family and even dated someone!! but, despite the four people who he actually knows and loves (he still thinks himself incapable of loving @wikipedia-the-official, his spouse properly) he’s lonely. he doesn’t think he can hold on to anyone or anything. despite surviving wayy to much and still retaining his kindness and his dorkiness, he’s still impacted on a much deeper level that doesn’t let him actually remain attached to anyone. it’s driving him insane. to make it worse, he’s immortal.
on the other hand, we have the police, a law-enforcing jail-obsessed arse who tracked the lowest on the same poll i used in the beginning. they were bullied and hurt and lost friends, and were a jaded piece of playing-by-the-rules shit. they still calmed down, though. they have a much larger - and more stable - support system than det does, because he let them in easily. det can’t do that, because everyone he’s ever loved has either died, or hated him, or been the cause of his unhappiness, or a combination of those. he always leaves first.
Tl;dr: the police came out of their trauma as a gloomy, rude buzzkill and the detective came out of his with his kindness and objective awesomeness still intact. despite the detective having friends and a new family and a spouse, on a fundamental level, he’s alone. police is the complete opposite, but he still has more people truly close to them.

also the "has been pushed away enough to never want to be close to another in fear of losing them or being forgotten" is made so much worse by the fact that he won't actually ever die and likely will see the people he loves die long before him and leave him and sdfgtjyhgtrf
they're sort of narrative foils to each other aren't they?
yep. the police was hurt, but never by those he loved. yes, that left him scarred and jaded and reluctant to open up to people, but also fiercely protective and strong. the detective was hurt in a million different ways by a million different uncaring people who he loved, and after that, he couldn’t truly let someone in. he was vulnerable to being completely off-the-rails when he was wronged or someone close to him was (eg the whole wikipedia-being-kidnapped thing). he’s going to be alone for all eternity even when his ‘loved ones’ are alive, but the police will live with the feeling of being loved even if every mortal he loves dies.

Sort of? So I'm actually also the mod of the passive inc (funnt enough they're dets sibling in law) account and while I'm definitely coming up with its lore they've infected my brain and won't leave

I have a hard time keeping up with it but the main idea is the first was Smile who's main thing is being sort of obsessed with smiling and being happy even when its forced and tries to get other to do it to which ended up with Frown, their oposite and the one who's trying to stop it and then that started a bunch of different blogs including Passive
They're a bit of a weird character, being both very submissive, indescisive and well, passive and somehow at the same time very, very loyal and absolutely too trusting with some people (like Smile for example who doesn't really treat it well most of the time)
And then what complicates it more is that they're a robot who lived who knows how long completely unaware of it and actually only learned now (which could explain a few things now that I think about it, as the original purpose of the bot was to serve and basically be a playmate or babysitter for children)
oh they're also a huge fan of fish. that too very important to chracter development /silly

okay so…in the gimmick authority, the detective is easily the sweetest, objectively nice person (i polled this back when i started the blog). he’s also been through childhood neglect, peer pressure, countless comparisons to his beloved ‘perfect’ brother…who then died on a ship with the judge (another authority member) and her girlfriend. he’s been pushed to the sidelines because of - and by - someone who he loved, who then died and left him and his family completely broken. then his family died, and he was left magically bonded with two random strangers and the sole survivor of the accident that killed his brother. he’s been forced into more uncomfortable situations than he’d want to admit, but he still grew to love his new family and even dated someone!! but, despite the four people who he actually knows and loves (he still thinks himself incapable of loving @wikipedia-the-official, his spouse properly) he’s lonely. he doesn’t think he can hold on to anyone or anything. despite surviving wayy to much and still retaining his kindness and his dorkiness, he’s still impacted on a much deeper level that doesn’t let him actually remain attached to anyone. it’s driving him insane. to make it worse, he’s immortal.
on the other hand, we have the police, a law-enforcing jail-obsessed arse who tracked the lowest on the same poll i used in the beginning. they were bullied and hurt and lost friends, and were a jaded piece of playing-by-the-rules shit. they still calmed down, though. they have a much larger - and more stable - support system than det does, because he let them in easily. det can’t do that, because everyone he’s ever loved has either died, or hated him, or been the cause of his unhappiness, or a combination of those. he always leaves first.
Tl;dr: the police came out of their trauma as a gloomy, rude buzzkill and the detective came out of his with his kindness and objective awesomeness still intact. despite the detective having friends and a new family and a spouse, on a fundamental level, he’s alone. police is the complete opposite, but he still has more people truly close to them.

honestly the amount of stuff about det that I related to probably isn't good or normal but I refuse to unpack that anytime soon
also the "has been pushed away enough to never want to be close to another in fear of losing them or being forgotten" is made so much worse by the fact that he won't actually ever die and likely will see the people he loves die long before him and leave him and sdfgtjyhgtrf
