Okay so in the 1940s and 50s, GM as in General Motors the car company began buying streetcar companies through shell companies across the United States with the goal of decommissioning the trolleys and replacing them with busses, this worked in pretty much every city not named Boston or Philadelphia. This was done because the busses were built by GM and other car companies and therefore they would be able to profit from public transit. And the worse service of busses would incentivise more people to use cars over transit, helping to solidify their transit monopoly
