maybe orpheus always looks back because his very effort to reverse death means that he can't look forward. if he could look forward, he could accept eurydice's death, grieve, and keep moving in life. his refusal to accept her death is looking back. his going down to the underworld, asking hades and persephone for her life, trying to lead her out... it's all 'looking back'. he does nothing for the entire story except look back. orpheus! looks! back! it's his entire thing! the story ends the same way it begins: orpheus looked back.

Hi! Welcome! đ
You're about to read John Rich & The Big Picture, a very funny story about a very anxious man hurtling towards his soulmate at 200 mph.
At 28, John Rich is the youngest cover artist in the illustrious history of The New York Review. This means, every week, he draws a portrait of some notable person and this portrait becomes the cover of this very prestigious magazine. But when John is tasked with drawing the supposedly vapid (and obviously gorgeous) action movie star, Tyler Hughes, he discovers that Tyler is the one person he cannot draw.Â
Updates weekly.

I'm super sleepy, but I had to turn my PC back on for this-- this year edition of AceSpaceLDN's Ace and Aro Zine is out!
And it's full to the brim with poetry, prose and visual artworks, with this year a focus on marginalised or underrepresented communities.
After writing a poem I was quite content with for last year's zine, I thought I'd sit this one out, but I was eventually inspired to write a new poem about my experience believing that I, and being believed to, have CPTSD.
My poem, Line of questioning, is 58th in line!
The zine is available for free on Ko-fi, with the option to pay a price of your choice if you wish to support the organisers.
Non-accessible version:
AceSpaceLDN's third global zine with contributions from the asexual and aromantic community. There are over 60 submissions including 2D art,
Acessible version (black text on white background, image descriptions, screenreader friendly):
This version has been redesigned for web accessibility to support easy navigation and comprehension. AceSpaceLDN's third global zine with c
Please check it out ââ(*ďźž-ă)v I hope you've had, or are having a great International Ace Day!
PS: last year's zine is still available (physical versions were sold at today's zine launch in London and that listing has yet to be updated, but the digital versions are still definitely available on Ko-fi!) and my poem from last year can be found here on my writing blog @jkpfr. Like I did last year, I'll be keeping my brand new poem zine-exclusive for at least a couple months!
The ebook for the Full Moon Problem is free for the next 3 days only! Grab it here.
Felix was raised by a family who upheld traditional medicine over all modern medicine â so when he turned 18 and started transitioning, Felix had to run away from home if he wanted to live his authentic life. Now, ten years later, heâs surprised when his aunt passes away and leaves him a house, far from the place he left. Leaving an unfulfilling life in London to give country living a try, Felix is soon overwhelmed by the amount of books on folk medicine and gardening his aunt left to him. Wanting to reconnect with her memory, Felix decides to give the family craft heâs always shunned a try, and soon the locals are asking him for the remedies they had relied on when his aunt was alive. One of those locals is Declan, the handsome deliveryman who immediately catches Felixâs eye. Declan is shy and reclusive, but Felix manages to chip away at Declanâs walls and soon discovers his secret: Declan is a werewolf who loses control on full moons, and only a potion Felixâs aunt used to make can help him gain back that control. Felix is determined to make this potion correctly and help Declan⌠and maybe fall in love in the process?

guys if one more person leaves a tag like this on my post im gonna lose my mind. There Are Science Fiction Authors Who Are Not Misogynistic Men
ok iâve gotten one too many âthis is why i donât read sci-fiâ comments so hereâs a rec list for the people convinced all science fiction is bad and misogynistic (with something for everyone, hopefully!):
(also, btw, the book links are to the Storygraph, which includes content warnings for each one!)
smth funny and lighthearted about a security robot whoâd rather watch TV then do its job? all systems red by martha wells (first novella in the The Murderbot Diaries series, 6 books, ongoing)
a complex, intricate political space opera following a warship AI whoâs lost (almost) everything? ancillary justice by ann leckie (first in the Imperial Radch trilogy) (fun fact! bc of space linguistics reasons, all characters in this series are referred to with she/her pronouns, making gender a non-factor - itâs really cool!)
a dark story about travelling between parallel universes and a woman who is dead in almost every single one? the space between worlds by micaiah johnson (standalone) (SO good, i donât get to recommend it often enough!!!)
a story about grief and letting go, and a unique take on alien invasion? the seep by chana porter (standalone novella)
hey, how abt some dystopian YA, for old times sake? specifically, one with sapphics and sick mechas? try gearbreakers by zoe hana mikuta (first in duology)
or, if youâd prefer something a bit less angsty, YA about a ragtag group of teens and a space heist? the disasters by m. k. england (standalone)
alternate history steampunk that blurs the line btwn science fiction and fantasy? the black godâs drums by p. djeli clark (standalone, novella)
a dark gone girl-esque thriller about clones? the echo wife by sarah gailey (standalone)
poetic sapphic romance and time travel? this is how you lose the time war by max gladstone and amal el-mohtar (standalone)
a hopeful utopian future and a human-robot friendship? a psalm for the wild-built by becky chambers (novella, first out of two) (this authorâs got a whole bunch of hopepunk sci-fi novels in general, if thatâs smth youâre looking for!)
africanfuturism, coming-of-age, and cool jellyfish aliens? binti by nnedi okorafor (novella, first in trilogy)
spicy lesbian cyborgs? and shall machines surrender my benjanun sriduangkaew (novella, first in the Machine Mandate series, 6 books)
cosmic horror with an autistic scientist, cyborg angels and AI gods? the outside by ada hoffmann (first in trilogy, 2 books are out)
also, if youâre a fan of Janelle MonĂĄe, may i draw your attention to the fact that theyâve recently come out with a Dirty Computer short story collection, each story co-written with a diff writer?
this list is long enough, but have some more authors (who are not cis men) also worth checking out: rivers solomon, yoon ha lee, charlie jane anders, aliette de bodard, xiran jay zhao, mary robinette kowal, corinne duyvis
and finally, not all older/classic scifi is written by crusty old white guys who hate women!!! some iconic authors iâd particularly recommend looking into are ursula k. le guin, octavia e. butler, samuel r. delany and vonda n. mcintyre đĽ°
Iâll add C.J. Cherryh and her Foreigner series to this! Alien politics, linguistics, adventure and intrigue⌠Sometimes the aliens arenât just like us, after all, and thatâs ok!
Throwing in a recommendation for These Burning Stars by Bethany Jacobs
