Febuary book, "The Shack"
I'm not sure you've read it before but it's a wonderful story about a family (but the father is the main character) going through a terrible time and the loss of a loved one. In a strange twist of faith, grace and miracles the father experiences a weekend the THE Father (and Jesus and The Holy Spirit are there as characters as well.) It's a journey of faith, relationships, love, family and healing. It's a downright incredible book that is a must read!

Let's talk about The Help?
A depressing book with CAKE in the title?
I'm not even going to pretend like I have any clue what was going on when Joseph was "becoming the chair" in his apartment. I felt like this aspect of the story was so random and did not add to the story line. While the book was depressing and sad to me, I enjoyed how we got to see a timeline of Rose's life and how she eventually grew into her "ability".
Was I the only one who wished that George and Rose ended up together??

Okay, have to say, this book was not what I expected it to be, though I wasn't really sure what to expect at all!!! I highly enjoyed the descriptiveness of the book and how she trails through the problems in her family through her food investigations. At times, it was hard to follow, especially when talking about the situation with her brother, Joseph.
Extremely interesting read, though I found myself asking "what!?" when I read the last page. I'm just glad she seemed to find her place in the kitchen! :)Â
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake: Part 1: Food
Submitted Post:Â mrsvaccarezza I have to admit that I was a little unsure how I was going to do reading this book, mainly because of it lack of quotations. Â I find myself rereading a lot of lines to double check who said them or what the quotation actually was.
Otherwise, I have finished the first part of the story and I guess I am liking it. Â The path that the book is headed is still unclear to me (and I am not one to really read the synopsis, so that could be part of the problem). Â I like the characters, the way the past is intermixed in the present, and am really interested to see where it is all headed. Â I am particularly curious about Joseph, and with the next part titled after him, I am anxious to see what it revealed. Â
I hope that everyone is enjoying it, I look forward to hearing other reactions and to reading more!

Title: The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake
Author: Aimee Bender
This book is based around the interesting idea of feeling empathy for the maker of food. The young antagonist is Rose. From the age of 8 onwards Rose is able to taste how people feel buy eating the food they make.
The book explores the idea well but focuses on the distress that this causes Rose more than anything else. I would’ve liked to have seen both sides of the ability explored. Instead the negative aspects of such a skill is the driving force of the story line. It gives the book a gloomy overtone.
This was an interesting read with an easy style. I finshed the book quickly as I enjoyed the authors wiritng but it felt unfinished or rushed towards the end.
Worth a read.

I finished the book yesterday and thought it was a great read.
Good, not too long one to start off the club with! I agree with YoChloe that it did seem to end rather abrubtly, and I wish that the plotline with Jacob and Marlena after they got married would have been devoloped further, but you get what you get and you don't throw a fit, right? That's what I tell my 3 yr. old anyway...:)
Do we have a pick for next month yet?
February Selection!
Don't hate me.
I realize it's February 2nd. I realize everyone has been suggesting books. I realize I have posted nothing.
HOWEVER, I was out of town, falling in love with Portland, OR and dying of a sinus infection. Go easy on me. BUT! I have decided. I got this book suggested once, and the title intrigued me, so I looked it up - and with my recent infatuation with all things cooking, I thought this sounded incredible!
Has anyone else heard of it? Does anyone HAVE it? Who is excited to join me in reading February's selection?

I absolutely loved Water for Elephants. I devoured it. I could not put it down until it was finished.
I fell in love with Jacob, I cried several times when he was telling the story as older Jacob in the nursing home. It made me want to go back to the '30s and be in a traveling circus just to see it all. I planned on reading this before I even knew about this book club or before I knew they were making it into a movie. Those things just gave me more incentive to get it read faster. I think I now have a new favorite!
I can't wait to see what the February book will be.
Also, when you first started this I submitted what you asked for to be a member and I am not sure if I am one or not?!

February Book Selection: Contest
We are having a ton of suggestions sent in, which I love, but I think to make this a fair decision... would anyone be opposed to, say, a little contest? :)
Make your personal February selection, and submit a post to Reading Resolution that summarizes the plot of your pick, and let us know why you think this would be a great selection for our second month! Keep it simple, a paragraph will do... but instead of looking up all of these summaries and reading gritty editorial reviews on our own, we want to know which is your absolute top pick for February... and a little bit of WHY :) After all, this is YOUR book club too!
Please submit these to RR by Wednesday, January 26th at 5:00pm. Winner will be announced on Thursday, January 27th!
Message me if you have questions!

Has everyone finished? I definitely liked the book, but I don't know if I loved it.
It was slow in the middle, and it left me wanting just a little more. That being said, it was so different and unique, it put me in a state of mind that not a lot of other books have done. The writing was great, I felt like I was there. The charactors were memorable and real... I found myself liking August despite him being a vicious animal/Marlena beater. I am definitely excited for the movie! All in all, good read.
