The Reluctant Sacrifice -Â Kerr-Ann Dempster - Review

The Thoughts -Â
I have mixed views on this book. It was an easy read, a quick one if you want something short and sweet. The characters are interesting, the premise -  a good one, and the action fast enough moving to be intriguing. However the writing is not the best, like phrases repeated a frustrating amount of times through out the book. The muttering of a curse, being one of them. Odd lines such as ââHis gaze was furious with a hint of annoyanceâ...what? One character being a little to nonchalant about the facts she is finding out about a potentially really dangerous situation, etc. The conversations often do not flow, and are cheesy to boot in many places, and the time line seems to get ahead of itself, before the reader can comprehend what is happening, as if Dempster is forgetting we are not in her head while she writes. Many points I thought would have been important to the plot line, are not included in the story so as a reader I am left without knowledge or understanding of why things are happening the way they are. Also Aubreyâs love for Joshua is utterly mind bending, namely because he is such an complete douche canoe. Her pining after him, or very well the love she wants him to feel for her, is excruciating to listen to. Let it go sister. The man is literally trying to kill you. Also this brings to mind the inconsistency of Joshua who is hell bent of doing such a task, yet slides on into her life with Coy as if he doesn't hunt her ruthlessly day and night for years....It's confusing as a reader that he doesn't have just slightly more difficulty with this adjustment. Almost to convenient for the story line, if you ask me. However with all that being said, I did enjoy this book for what it was, and most likely would continue on with the series. There are lots of character that I think are worth exploring, and Iâm interested to see how the story progresses considering the main objective of the plot seems to be fulfilled already and we are only on book one. I had thought it was all wrapped up in a little bow at the ending which I was not a fan of, however Goodreads tells me this is to be a series, so Iâll take the ride to the next stop at least. Until next time, SlĂĄn!
