So Youâre Moving...
I moved into a wonderful new apartment a little over a year ago and in true planner nerd, professional organizer, interior decorator wannabe fashion, I made a colorful, engaging and thorough list of what I needed for my new apartment organized by room. During my weekly cleaning or deep cleaning spring purge, I would look at the list and say to myself âKeep this Ray! It will be a great list to share on your blog.â Months and months later...the Moving Master List series is born. Enjoy!!
Hello everyone! Itâs been a long time but Iâm so happy to finally be back. My word for 2018 is gratitude. After I lost my brother, I began to live for two. No matter how terrible the day or unbearable the situation may be, I make an honest effort to be thankful for life, good health, great people, and an opportunity to end the day better than I began it. This year I am practicing gratitude in big and small ways everyday. I hope that the first (almost) half of 2018 has been good to you!
The Calendar/Planner v. The To Do List
While I have always incorporated these two useful tools in my day to day living, I had not given much thought to the roles that each played in helping to keep all of the moving pieces and obligations juggled nicely. It wasnât until reading Itâs All Too Much by Peter Walsh (my current book) and attending a CLE (Continuing Legal Education-requirement for attorneys) where Paul H. Burton of Quiet Spacing discussed strategies to regain command of your day, that I realized I had been using the tools âcorrectly.â
Calendars/Planners- I LOVE planners/calendars. When used correctly, they give you the big picture. You can easily see your free time and know which weeks in the month will be tougher than others. I believe that a monthly spread is essential. Whether you follow it up with a weekly layout or a daily layout is a matter of personal preference and scheduling needs. Calendars should be used ONLY for events which are time-bound. By time bound I mean occurring at a specific time or on a specific day. If the item does not have to be done at a certain time or on a certain day it should NOT make its way into the calendar.
So what do you do with everything else? The grocery list? The work and/or personal tasks you hope to do? Thatâs where the separate to do list comes in.
To-Do Lists- It doesnât need to be fancy. I happen to like colorful papers (the Target notepads are some of my favorites). It has always helped to make the boring and ever-growing list of tasks seem a bit more fun and bearable. Whether you use post it notes, sheets from your legal pad at work, or the back of an envelope, you have to be able to find it. After all, what good is a list that you canât locate?Â
Now, things from the to do list can migrate to the calendar once they have a specific day or time attached to their completion.
Keeping thee two types of items separate should also help with the overwhelm and overload.
Happy planning all and best of luck in making making all of the to-dos...done âď¸â đŻ

The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into smaller manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.
