Animal Crossing Fun Fact!
Back in the first week of New Horizons’ launch, I didn’t fully understand the animals moving in mechanics, and ended up having my first two houses have animals automatically move in after being vacant for a day. One of those animals was Hazel.
Now see, I’ve been playing Animal Crossing since the GameCube. Just seeing the name Hazel and my mind immediately flashed back to a normal type squirrel that lived in my old town back in the day, all the way down to her half closed eyes with purple eyelids. Naturally, I thought this was who I was getting.
Now, with this in mind, just imagine my surprise when a squirrel named Hazel did indeed move in, but she was a sisterly type and looked like this.
This is not me saying I hate this Hazel. Far from it actually. She’s become one of my favorite villagers and she is NEVER allowed to move away ever. Still though, I was so confused because I was positive that the half lid normal squirrel back in my GameCube days was named Hazel, so I did some digging and learned of this funny little chain of events.
This is Sally. Looks a lot like the squirrel I thought was going to be Hazel, huh? That’s because it IS her. So did I simply get the name wrong? NOPE! It’s way more funnier than that. It turns out Nintendo of America made an oopsie with their translation and gave the OG Hazel a different name in Wild World, hence Sally.
Now this is when you would think this little fun fact will end, but nope! The rabbit hole goes even deeper still, and I’m not even referencing Margie’s name in the movie being Sally. (but that is pretty hilarious considering where I’m going with this.)
Meet Sally from Animal Crossing GameCube! Yep that’s right, not only did Nintendo of America accidentally rename a villager, but they accidentally gave her a name from an entirely different squirrel villager all together. OG Sally here was removed in Wild World, so there wasn’t anything like two different Sallys in the same game. What happened to her, though?
This is Cally! Totally different from OG Sally in every way. I kid of course! It’s the same squirrel, but renamed and reintroduced in New Leaf alongside the current Hazel due to sisterly being a new personality type introduced in New Leaf.
So to summarize it all, OG Hazel was changed into Sally in Wild World, OG Sally was removed and repurposed into Cally in New Leaf, and since Nintendo of America didn’t want to waste such a good name for a squirrel, I guess, gave their new sisterly squirrel the name. I found out all of this purely because for some reason I remembered my squirrel’s name way back in my first town. I hope this amused you just as much as this journey has amused me.
