i have difficulty coming 2 grips with the fact that there is serious a piece of media that my mutuals seriously like surrounding a cannibal named fucking hannibal

look. i don’t think my stretch marks are beautiful. i don’t think they’re tiger stripes or natural tattooos. i don’t think my acne is beautiful. i don’t think the bags under my eyes are beautiful. i just think they’re human. and i don’t think i have to be beautiful all of the time in order to be accepted and loved and sucessful. i don’t think every small detail of my outer appearence needs to be translated into prettiness.

fun fact: this POV is actually called “body neutrality” and it’s SO MUCH more accessible/realistic for a lot of people. it’s based on the idea that the way we look is the least interesting/important thing about who we are, and that our bodies are worthy of respect regardless if they fit the mold of the current beauty ideals.

When you pull out your phone to check the time and instead text twelve people, look up the meaning of a word you’ve been repeating all day, look up 100 other things, find new music, and then put it away, only to pull it out again half a second later because you still don’t know what time it is.

This is fucking horrific

That moment, when they come over the rise and see the razed village is one of the best scenes in film. Period. Somehow, instead of giving me tonal whiplash, it took my breath away, and that’s one fuck of a balancing act.

Also, always write what you love. Write what you would've wanted to read. Write what draws you in. Write a little selfishly, even when you take requests. So that you may be happy going back to it later and smile/laugh at your writing even if it's flawed. Write to put something out there that you feel like it deserves to be. Because even if you touch a single person, it's a person that was missing the same content you were. And fuck, isn't it great to be the voice somebody wanted to hear?

Can I give completely unsolicited advice to fantasy writers that I wish someone had given me when I was into fantasy writing? The cliche “write what you know” is bad advice if taken literally, it’s how we get books about depressed middle-aged creative writing professors who contemplate having an affair. But generally speaking it can be helpful. Tolkien wrote a medieval fantasy because he was the world’s foremost expert on medieval English literature. His book about Beowulf is still considered academically significant. He gave every race detailed languages because he was also a linguist. He wrote about giant battles because he was traumatized by his time in World War I and wrote during World War II. You don’t have to do any of this because that isn’t you. You are allowed to write a whole fantasy epic without a single battle (or you can make battle scenes modern urban melees because clashes of great armies aren’t a thing anymore.) If, say, you’re really into fashion, feel free to describe in painstaking detail every outfit that elves wear for all possible occasions. I promise you it’s no weirder than describing the dialects of tree people. What I’m saying is, you’re not Tolkien and that’s a very good thing because your voice is needed more. Let your freak flag fly and make the world that comes from you specifically.

“Your voice is needed more.” Let’s be the writers of our generation.
