the unsettling feeling doesn't leave her, even when they exit the cave. vex'ahlia's skin prickles, be it from the wind or from a force she cannot name or place or point out. when @ravildan mentions it, too, relief fills her features; so she's not alone in this, thankfully. the twisted turn of her stomach is not her own, but theirs to bear. as twins, as siblings... always two. always together. always aligned, even in the haze of dread. "something's up with that place," she muses in agreement, brow furrowed, eyes darting back to the shelter, "although it wasn't there when we first arrived. i wonder if..." after a long pause, vex shakes her head. she turns back to her brother "never mind. we're leaving it anyway, and that's all that matters." with their things gathered and the strange cave abandoned, vex ignores the grating pang in her head and gives the landscape before them a quick once-over. "into the next city, i suppose. maybe we can find work there for a time. coming, brother?"
“ perhaps it's cursed? ” vax'ildan offers the suggestion as a joke, but truthfully, it probably is. that would be their luck, entering a cursed cave and leaving with something nasty attached. so far, so good, though, as he starts off through the forest. it's not dark yet, but it will be soon. hopefully they can find somewhere to sleep. if he has to go another night without so she can rest, then so be it. he looks around, noting the furrow in her brow. was something following them? he rests his hand against the hilt of his dagger before they continue, a way to comfort himself, and he starts to walk again. “ yes, to the next city. we would do well to stop once more, in case it is far from us. we can share the last rabbit, get a fire going, rest a bit and continue on. does that sound fair? ”
they've seen plenty of terrible things before. horrible things that have crawled under her skin and lingered there, dark things that stayed too long in the corners of her mind before she had found the light to pierce them away. but this? today? this is different, it all feels too close and far too personal. it leaves her feeling small, frustratingly weak, and the lump that has formed in the pit of her throat since seeing vex laying there refuses to abate.
"i'm... i'm ok, thanks," she replies quietly after a long pause and the words are hollow. her teeth bite into her lower lip as she looks up from the dancing flames to vax. it's always been easy enough to lie to the others, or at least temper down her true feelings where necessary, but it's harder with him. (that's a thought for another day, though, when she doesn't feel stained with fear and grief.) her confession spills from her lips like a flood. "honestly, vax? i don't think i'm ok. today-, all of it was terrible and-, and..." she trails off with a heavy sigh and the lump in her throat threatens to become a boulder.
swallowing it down painfully, she looks to him and an uncommonly tired gaze assesses his features thoughtfully. her voice softens. "are you ok, vax?"
his heart breaks for her, and he lets out a quiet sigh as he rests his hand against her shoulder. perhaps if it were another day, he might have tried to put his arm around her shoulder, but his mind weighs heavy. it wouldn't be fair to him, and it especially wouldn't be fair to her. “ i'm so sorry, kiki. ” vax'ildan says quietly, turning to look at her. the image haunts him, seeing his sister laying there. he cannot imagine how much worse it would be if he'd watched it happen. he probably would have killed percy.
it would be a cliche to say tomorrow will be better, especially when they both know it will not. he's afraid to sleep, afraid that the visions that have been plaguing him while he's awake will follow him to sleep. how can he tell her this? he can't burden her. he refuses to.
“ i'm not. i'm not okay. ” the words leave vax'ildan's mouth faster than he means them to, and he has to turn his head away from her, just for a moment. “ it's been just her and me for our whole lives. seeing her like that was the worst thing i've ever experienced. ” it crushed him more than the death of their mother — they were far from her when she died. vex'ahlia perished right under his nose and he didn't even know it. “ how am i supposed to move past something like that? ”

the group's unexpected detour to syngorn was hardly expected, and truthfully, all it did was compound the stress he already felt and was continuing to feel after vex'ahlia had died. the visions. his lingering anger towards percy. the constant feeling like he was being pulled into something he wanted no part of. and now? his fucking father. all these years later, and nothing had changed. he didn't know what was worse, seeing him treat his new child so well, or seeing him treat his twin sister with such disdain.
when keyleth asks him what's on his mind, he does not want to burden her. he rubs the back of his neck, sighing. “ i haven't seen my father in years. i wasn't expecting a warm welcome, but this... ” he trails off, letting his head droop between his knees. the fire before them crackles, and he hears vex and percy's quiet snores fill the air.

vax'ildan turns to look at her, lips pursed slightly. had it been so obvious? vex had noticed it, of course, but he'd expected that. he knew keyleth was observant, but he thought he was hiding it better. “ of course it isn't. ” he grumbles, turning to look at her. “ i'm having a hard time forgetting what happened to vex. i turned around for one minute, and percy let her die. i know she's alive, okay? you don't forget something like that. ” it had been just the two of them for so long — and he knows she knows that. it is weighing on him, too. it should be a good enough distraction for now. he doesn't particularly feel like sharing his visions with anyone right now.

what if we plotted a little haha... UNLESS?
they haven't spoken in a while. haven was difficult to process, and while they came out mostly victorious, hypatia still thinks of the lives they lost and the place they once called home. it's hard to have casual conversation with an ally after something so destructive, after coming face to face with a figure like corypheus. fortunately @ravildan seems to ignore the awkward bits between them and find her himself, joining hypatia in a quiet, desolate tower she found within skyhold's ancient walls.
he's friendly, friendlier than she expected an antivan crow to be. another thing her parents lied about — another addition to the long list of betrayals and falsehoods she's been living with all this time. in contrast to the stories she's been taught, vax'ildan is encouraging, taking the seat nearby and volleying his support through comfortable dialogue and a respectable (albeit mischievous) air. he's exactly what hypatia needs in this moment: friendship, allegiance, and belief. belief in her. "not going to lie, hearing an antivan crow tell me i've got this handled actually does wonders for my morale." she laughs gently, shaking her head. "if you can see some competence within me... i mean, you're not a fool, and i trust you, so... i must be doing something right." at the prospect of stepping away, finding something else to do than inquisition business, hypatia's grin grows. "my perfect night has changed, actually. all this adventure, fighting alongside warriors like you... it's got me addicted to the feeling of wind in my hair. i think i like the riding the best, riding our horses as fast as we can. if i had my say, we'd take our horses out right now and run through the mountains." it's silly, but she admits it proudly. "are you suggesting we go do that right now, vax?"
it's so easy to laugh with her. apparently, a crow believing in her does wonders for morale, and it makes him laugh. it's a real one that causes him to bend over and grab his stomach briefly before he straightens back out, looking at hypatia with a smile on his face. “ i think you may be the first person to ever have uttered those words in the history of thedas. ” vax'ildan shifts in his seat, hoping he's helping. it looks like he is. she's smiling, she's sharing with him. he nods along, listening to her describe her perfect night. horses, the mountain air... he couldn't have come up with a more perfect night if he tried. at least one he could share with her.
“ i didn't know you liked to ride horseback. ” he doesn't know why he would have ever known it, but it's still fascinating nonetheless. vax'ildan starts to think back, wondering when the last time he rode horseback was. probably before he joined the crows. a lone rider draws more attention than sneaking around does. feeling embolded, he leans forward in his chair, elbows resting on his thighs while his hands tent together. “ and if i was? would you go on a late night ride with me through the mountains, inquisitor? ” a grin pulls at his lips, eyes searching her face to see how she reacts to his light teasing.
