The whole idea was that Mac on the side of his boxing training does some urban exploring and with the help of Doc investigates this old like abandoned sports complex thing. For context, Idk what league Mac boxes in I never really found the time to plan it but it wasnt the W.B.V.A for plot reasons regarding characters.

So while he is investigating he comes across a few of the boxers, specifically those who were in the first punch out game from 1987 but they are ghosts and passed in accidents relating to like sport related health issues or like just tragic incidents. Note that not all of the boxers present in the 1987 release are ghosts, again its for the plot.
