They took in some people from a clothing store next door too. The employees could have gone home but couldn’t bring themselves to kick the customers out into the snow because some of them had an impossible three hours drive home and would have gotten stuck on the road in their cars so the employees and their boss opted to stay.

The woman who reported on the incident trekked alone through piles of snow on foot. She couldn’t bring a cameraman so everything was filmed with a small handheld camera.

They ate food from the cafeteria (meatballs of course), watched a Christmas show and football before getting to pick any bed they wanted in the store. In the morning they were served cinnamon buns and coffee/tea.

I feel like I’m a pretty news-connected person, but this is 100% the first I’ve heard of this so I bet a lot of others haven’t either. If you are on food stamps or Medicaid, if you have a child in a subsidized lunch program, if you received a Pell grant last year, if you are part of a Tribal-specific aid plan, or if you lost significant wages during the pandemic, you may qualify for up to $50 off your internet monthly and up to $100 off a one-time computer purchase. 

The program begins today and lasts until the money runs out, so I strongly recommend that if you qualify or even if you just think you MIGHT qualify to go and apply. 

6 years ago, I had a knee injury where I fractured my kneecap and tore my meniscus. I still feel chronic pain from that injury, and it now my kneecap will subluxate under certain conditions like pivoting my leg, which creates compounding damage and additional downtime. I’ve been through PT for it and wear a brace and KT tape when necessary. 

This is what disabled people are talking about when we say able-bodied people are one injury away from a permanent disability. Doctors will have you believe that these things can be healed from, but truly things like knee injuries can be a lifelong disability/chronic pain issue.  

In another camp, my husband got adult onset asthma after a bout of bronchitis, which is a relatively common infection. He now is living with a chronic illness the rest of his life.
