Why is it challenging for Transgender students to Afford and Approach College?
It's honestly draining and disappointing to see discrimination amongst people in society.
Transgender people always try so hard every day to be seen by others in every area of life. I am more sad and disappointed than angry by those who contribute to the prejudice of others. The more these kinds of situations happen in life, the more I wonder what it will take to really bring a change to the world. Almost all my friends along with myself are all queer and we find ways to just laugh the troubles away than be fearful or angry--though we still have our worries for our futures.
My friend and I are both transgender men who are preparing ourselves for the next step in our lives--college. Queer people face many issues regarding finances, shelter, healthcare, and education. Being trans causes us to worry about the environments we will enter in our futures due to the rampant transphobia in many places. Many may wonder why transgender people have to worry about preparing for college when there are scholarships advertised for them since they are minorities, but they don't realize that--compared to the amount of every other scholarship--there are not that many scholarships for transgender people. Along with that, scholarships are already competitive and if you cannot win these scholarships, then it gets really demotivating. While that doesn't mean transgender people are not allowed to apply for scholarships outside of the LGBTQ+ category, scholarship organizations may secretly be transphobic and reject an applicant due to them being transgender or they may reject an applicant if they choose to use their preferred name and gender that is different than their legal one. It is stupid to know that these kinds of things exist especially since I don't think that it can be proven that someone rejected an applicant all because they were trans. It just takes is just a simple skip with no words of explanation.
College will be a scary time. It always has been for people, whether it be about debt, socializing, workloads, or personal mental health. It can be even scarier when you do not have the kind of support that everyone needs, so there are those who feel that they are alone. No matter what happens, just keep going. Life will always punch people in the face without hesitation and it's a choice on whether to get knocked out or to get back up. This doesn't mean that people shouldn't be weak, it's a matter of not staying weak. Accepting one's weakness and planning how to move forward from it is a sign of strength.
People who are transgender are just as deserving of a college education as anyone else in this world. The fact that a college education is something to be paid for to achieve is honestly disappointing at times. Why make Kindergarten through 12th-grade education free yet create a financial obstacle for those who desire it? Capitalism is a very interesting concept, yet frustrating at times. It can get even more frustrating when you work so hard in college, paying every cent towards the thousands of dollars, only for your degree to not land you a stable job meaning that it was all for nothing in the end.
Transgender people not only have to deal with the financial struggles of college education but the financial struggles towards their own transition. I and my friend can definitely account for that. The right to higher education and the right to get medical care to live comfortably in one's body both require money from the one in need. In a country where being poor is a minority in itself, it is a struggle to live a happy and fulfilled life.
I hope all transgender people will be able to attend college despite how difficult life maybe for them. I want all transgender people to be able to get equal rights and be able to have a comfortable future. Everyone can succeed, no matter what minority or whatever kind of person you are.
