I think that when you're overstimulated you should appear kind of grayed out and no one should be able to interact with you like a locked character in a video game
do u wanna play glitter ponies from mlp with me or do you. Hate me
I could start a business where any straight guy who doesn't understand why women don't like him can hire me to follow him around and every time he does something annoying I can point it out like "see, this is why women don't like you."

smosh as textposts (again!)
trans angel thesis post
so me and @titsgirlbuffyā on our joint watch noticed this line (in my header image!) from btvs s1e7 and immediately thought hehehe well he said heās not a man, that means Heās Trans. partly due to the existing bank of star trek characters who clearly meant they werent human but just happened to phrase it a certain way ā its great fun to just take these lines out of context and run with them
[ID: angel in a darkly lit scene saying āI can walk like a man, but Iām not one.ā]
the thing is tho the further we got the more trans angel material we kept finding. like we werenāt even looking it was just There. so it went from basically a joke to the actual lens through which weāre now watching ats so. hereās the trans angel thesis post i guess!
so obviously this line was intended to mean hes a demon. its from the episode where we first find out hes a vampire, so the writers are clearly using ānot a manā to mean ānot a human beingā as mentioned before. but then thereās the flashbacks in ats s1e15 to when he was alive and definitely human whichā¦
[ID: three screenshots of angel and his father in 1700s dress. his father says āItās a son I wished for! A man! Instead, God gave me you.ā while Angel looks hurt]
i remember another post (which i will try and find and link to) saying that darla was trapped by societal confines of womanhood and she was drawn to angel bc he was being crushed by societal expectations of masculinity ā ābeing a manā was something he resoundingly failed at in life. crucially also his birth name, Liam, is left off his headstone and no one ever calls him it again. in contrast to spike for example, who still responds to William, Angel seems to consider Liam to effectively be his deadname (which is funny yk given he only used it when he was alive), and both of his chosen names, Angelus and Angel, are much less masculine.
spike regularly refers to himself as a man, he also sometimes acknowledges that heās not technically a man meaning not human, but for him this is paired with wishing he could be a man (āi know that iām a monster, but you treat me like a manā btvs s5e22, āto be a kind of manā¦ā s7e22). in every sense masculinity isnāt something that seems to cause him any kind of distress to be associated with, and while he still has a fascinating relationship to gender i think youād be hard pushed to say he doesnāt identify as male (tho iād love to hear any takes on that!!).
on the other hand, here we have one of the few times angel willingly refers to himself as a man in btvs s3e10
[ID: two screenshots of angel, crying and facing buffy, saying āItās not the demon in me that needs killing, Buffy. Itās the man.ā]
if there is a part of himself that he sees as a man, its something he associates with guilt, failure and weakness. obviously thereās other layers to this scene but i do think the word choice is interesting!!
and then theres what i consider one of the seminal trans angel episodes, ats s2e6. first of all he admits that he changes his appearance based on how he wants other people to see him, that heās worried about what they think. the character heās talking to in these scenes tells him since he doesnāt have an actual reflection, his outward appearance only matters when considering the people around him, and that thereās two versions of him ā āthe image youāve worked so hard to create, and the real you.ā
[ID: Angel, looking concerned and saying āMaybe my persona is a little affectedā]
his outward - masculine - presentation is something he maintains for the sake of what others think of him, itās not an authentic expression of who he is (see this post by @buffyologyā on how he literally seems to get his whole wardrobe directly from mens fashion magazines). also in this episode, he refers to the aspects of himself that heās repressing as āitā ā dehumanising but also degendering the things he doesnāt want to come to the surface
[ID: four screenshots of dialogue between angel and another character out of frame. he asks angel āit?ā to which angel responds āthe demon.ā the other character then says āah. But the demon is you.ā angel says ānoā, the other character responds āyes. Thatās the thing youāve spent so much energy trying to conceal.ā]
he explicitly labels the things about himself heās afraid of other people seeing with a genderless pronoun, lumping in the demonic aspects of himself alongside the other things being hidden by his artificial masculine outward presentation. he hates himself for being a vampire, and for having done awful things in the past, but also for failing to live up to the expectations of masculinity that heās still hollowly trying to perform now as he was when he was alive.
masculinity is tied to humanity which is tied to morality ā he ascribes the bad parts of himself to āthe demonā which is also genderless, he equates his failure to be a good person with his failure to be a man. in ats s1e15 his father tells him heās neither a son nor a man, and later on in the same episode darla tells a freshly turned angelus that heāll never be able to get his fatherās approval and that his defeat will last lifetimes ā heās still trying to prove himself a man and heās never going to succeed. in ats s2e5 we get this exchange as darla burns angel with a cross
Ā [ID: three screenshots of a standoff between angel and darla, in the first two he holds her by the throat while she burns him with a crucifix. she says āSee? No matter how good a boy you are⦠God doesnāt want you.ā In the third screenshot she stands apart and says āBut I still do.ā]
Darlaās word choice in this scene also links masculinity to morality and humanity - essentially saying he will never be a good enough person nor perform masculinity convincingly enough to be accepted by anyone but her, because heās a vampire and he canāt change this fact of who his is.
but itās not a moral failing not to want to be a man, and as much as angel tries to hide and repress it itās still going to come through because itās just who he is. while trying his best to Look like a man, heās still finding ways to assert his identity through his choice of name and aversion to gendered language
[ID: two screenshots cropped to just show subtitles - āMore than you might think, Mr. Angel.ā āJust Angelā]
[ID: two screenshots cropped to just show subtitles - āYeah, Iām gonna Ā have to go with Dead Boy on this one.ā āCould you not call me that?ā] And Ā then thereās this scene where heās talking about the differences Ā between him and Cordelia and like, i get the joke but also. come on. he Ā cannot commit to calling himself a man without chickening out
[ID: two screenshots dodgily cropped and stitched together to just show subtitles - āHuman. Vampire. Woman. Man⦠pire.ā]Ā admittedly most of these lines have fairly obvious intended meanings and me and @titsgirlbuffy Ā were likely picking up on the subtext mostly because we were watching Ā both shows through this lens. it could be argued as a niche reading - up Ā until ats s3e6 that is, in which thereās a guy called Billy who can Ā curse men to become fucked up and evil, who tries to curse Angel, only Ā for him to be immune. A curse. That only affects men. to which he is, Ā randomly, immune.
[ID: four screenshots cropped to just show subtitles - ā[Cordelia] I Ā donāt get it.ā Angel replies āI donāt get it, either.ā and Cordelia Ā continues āI mean, youāre a man, so, why didnāt Billyās touch affect Ā you?ā] Ā I cannot stress enough that they genuinely didnāt have a good Ā reason ā whoever wrote this episode hadnāt come up with a decent Ā explanation as to why angel was immune to the Curse That Affects Men. Ā This is not a great episode but I do consider it to be basically canon Ā confirmation that Angel at the very least isnāt cis.So to Ā conclude, Angel is nonbinary/transfemme and has been trying and failing Ā to perform masculinity well enough to hide this since he was alive. He Ā objects to being called masculine terms and almost never refers to Ā himself as a man, he changed his name to something more androgynous and Ā refuses to go by his old name, and he admits to dressing and acting a Ā certain way to seem more normal and masculine in other peopleās eyes. He Ā associates the parts of himself that he hates, fears, and represses, Ā with genderlessness. And he is immune to a curse that only affects men. Ā thank you for reading this long fucking post!

Jschlatt, Ted Nivison and Charlie Slimecicle lookalike contest in my bedroom RIGHT NOW !!
I think part of why Buffy is initially so disgusted by Spike's feelings for her is the self-abasement. She sees herself when she looks at him. He's so desperate for scraps of love, he'll try to change his nature, to remake himself for her. I find this romantic, but also hella sad.
That's how Buffy was in her relationships with Angel and Riley. Sure, she's still slaying the monsters, ra-ra girl power a la Whedon, but those relationships reduced her to begging for their love, and for them to see her and how much she loved and wanted them. Her love for Angel made her break the rules and act against her own sense of morality (killing Faith, anyone...). Making those decisions, Buffy damaged her own heart.
Inspiring that kind of self-abandoning devotion in someone else, I can see how that might be terrifying.
back on the subject of my unwavering belief that spike and drusilla are Different than other vampires. in s2e13 the judge tells spike and dru that they "reek of humanity." that they experience affection and jealousy. then in s2e14, after angel loses his soul, the judge says "theres no humanity in him." like what more proof do u need!!!! spike and dru dont have souls, just like angel, yet they still have their humanity.
personally i believe who you are as a human has a direct affect as to who you become as a vampire. i dont believe in the whole "a demon takes over your body but its no longer you" spiel the watchers council is putting out there. i think its still them but without a soul.ļæ¼
angel wasnt a good person, he didnt care for anyone but himself, so he became a horrible vampire. spike was a good person, but he craved validation, so he became a decent vampire, full of love and care for his own, but was corrupted by angel out of a need to belong. drusilla was the picture of innocence, but angel drove her into insanity, so she became a crazy vampire who still had her ability to love and feel as a human would.
i have also seen speculation that maybe the intention the sire puts into creating a vampire has an effect on how that vampire turns out and i can def see that too. angel wanted an evil, crazy, lapdog who he could take advantage of and created drusilla. he got what he wanted. dru wanted someone to love and to love her, someone who would always understand her and never leave her, someone who was hers. and spike is nothing if not drusillas hopelessly devoted lover.
i love when drusilla just starts shaking her hands around and making noises when she's overwhelmed or upset. me too queen
This may be one of my favorite things Iāve ever done.

Honey, we have guests. Bring out the fine china.
Ok but everyone at Sunnydale High who isnāt friends with Buffy must think sheās like super Christian. I mean she wears a giant fucking cross necklace literally every single day, and my the time s2 rolls around sheās acquired at least 3 different cross necklaces. OTOH it must be so confusing for Joyce. Like imagine your life is totally normal and then one day your daughter blows up the fucking school and you have to move to a whole new town so she can go to school there but literally the day you get there she starts wearing the cross everyday. Seriously does Joyce just think she had some kind of religious awakening when they moved to Sunnydale?
