When writing always remember… a character flaw is only a flaw until becomes useful.
Is your protagonist manipulative? Well that’s awful… until they manipulate the antagonist into making a decision that saves the lives of their friends.
Is your protagonist a skeptic? Well that’s not good… until someone tries to lie to them.
Is your protagonist overprotective? That sucks… until someone they love is in danger.
Is your protagonist remorseless? Well that makes them pretty unlikeable… until a hard decision has to be made.
The flipside is also true!
Your protagonist is honest? That’s good… until their survival depends on them being able to lie convincingly.
Your protagonist is brave? That’s good… until they foolishly run headlong into danger without a thought for the consequences.
Your protagonist is forgiving and able to see good in everyone? That’s good… until they continually forgive someone who doesn’t deserve it, and get taken advantage of because they can’t fathom that some people just suck.
Your protagonist is funny? That’s good… until they piss off everyone around them because they don’t seem to be taking the situation seriously, and they keep avoiding dealing with their problems by hiding behind humor.
Most personality traits aren’t inherently good or bad. It’s all about context, and how far they go.

[Description: a looping bouncy animation of grace and Rocky from project hail mary. Grace throws himself onto rocky for a hug, smiling and nuzzling his face to the top of Rocky's xenonite covered carapace. Rocky brings a claw up to ruffle Grace's hair and grace throws himself even more on top of rocky, rocky wrapping his arms around grace. End description.]
all all all
okay, so i had the fortune of accidentally coming across this masterpiece after seeing the movie which naturally lead to me reading the book in the span of three days. while this was the best and regrettably maybe the first book i read this year and i enjoyed it A LOT, i did miss this conversation in it. after those 500 pages leading up to the great reveal that Grace did not volunteer to sacrifice his life, i wished it would have been discussed more. sure, at that point he had very much grown and risked his life multiple times to save others, but i would have appreciated this or a similar scene existing somewhere.
(same goes kinda for his opinion on Stratt, i’m curious what his thoughts on her actions were in the end and what he would have told her if he ever had the chance. but idk, i guess this moral dilemma and drama wasn’t really the center of the story.)
yeah, so what i really want to say is that this comic is awesome
knew I needed to draw this when I saw reference…
come on!!

“Many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, ‘What do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.’ Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope.”
— Vincent Van Gogh
“If I am worth anything later, I am worth something now. For wheat is wheat, even if people think it is a grass in the beginning.”
- Vincent van Gogh
Congrats if you survived this year because what the fuck was that
the mighty nein — Poor madman, that's what happens when you drink saltwater
god the tragedy of being born within a culture where it's expected of a person to live a lot of very long lifes to lose your mother with whom you should've had an opportunity to spend centuries with just after you reached your own adulthood. in the beginning of your first life. with everyone around you not being able to share your pain, because they, unlike you, had an opportunity to get to know her. because the loss will never be the same. with you killing her by her own desire, in an act to be considered honorable by the religion causing her death. with not even your own mother understanding the pain of ending her life with your own hand and after everything you've done to prevent it. essek thelyss you are such an unlucky man
So many thoughts. I loved this finale episode. Crazy that it’s over now. Devastating even. But it has been great, this episode especially was so exciting, finally seeing the traveler, Nott overcoming her fear of water, Beau dressed up and flirting with Astrid (!), Caleb’s speech to Trent (!!!), whatever was going on with Molly, Fjord evolving and getting new powers (?), Yasha joining! Also Essek first kinda met the Nein! It was absolutely crazy. Time to rewatch the entire season! Also luckily there’s the campaign, so maybe waiting for season 2 will be bearable.

Whooooo! She has it! I’m so excited!
Yasha this episode has been great
To anyone who believes fairy tale romances never happen in real life, may I remind you that JRR and Edith Tolkien met and experienced a forbidden love in their youth, and then were separated for five whole years because of his guardian’s rules that he could not date till he was 21, and she got engaged to someone else only because she assumed he’d forgotten her and lost hope that she could ever be with him, but then on his 21st birthday, he wrote her a letter saying he still loved her and wanted to marry her, she responded basically saying ‘if I’d known you hadn’t left me on the shelf, I would never have said yes to anyone else,’ then a week later she greeted him at the train station and then immediately dumped her fiancé, and they got married and she converted to his religion and danced for him in a flowering field far away from the trenches into which he was drafted, which left such an impression that he crafted an entire story about the most beautiful maiden in the world who danced in the woods and made enormous sacrifices to be with the man she loved, and they had four kids and remained faithful to each other and blissfully grew old together and their gravestones are now marked with the names of that same fictional couple that he created, who broke every rule and overcame every possible obstacle to be together and get a happy ending, who only did all that because he based it all on their own real love story.
Knowing all this has always made this bit of Beren’s song instantly reduce me to tears:
Though all to ruin fell the world
and were dissolved and backward hurled
unmade into the old abyss,
yet were its making good, for this—
the dawn, the dusk, the earth, the sea—
that Lúthien on a time should be!
Tolkien straight up wrote a poem that said “the world could end, but it wouldn’t have all been pointless, because she was in this world, however briefly, and that justified all the rest.” Kills me.
Who can outdo Wife Guy Tolkien? Dude was writing elaborate AUs where his wife is an impossibly beautiful magic-wielding immortal elf princess who fights Satan and wins to rescue her human boyfriend from Satan’s doom fortress. Flawless.
Final note: while they were dating, a favorite activity was to go to a local cafe with a balcony and throw sugar cubes into people's hats.
random appreciation post about the animation and artwork in the mighty nein episode 7
Thinking about the bitterness in Essek’s voice when he says “You know the queen will execute you if she discovers you have Typhros.”
He’s clearly terrified, but I remember thinking, ‘Really? Getting sick is a crime punishable by death? Or Typhros is such a taboo that any trace of it must be erased?’ because that’s how Essek makes it sound.
But Deirta’s conversation with Leylas this week shows that Essek has been misunderstanding (deliberately, willfully) the core of Luxon traditions. Deirta and Leylas don’t see this as an execution, they see it as a release from the endless life and an opportunity to return to the Luxon itself. Consecution means that den members don’t cling to life beyond the decline of their bodies, and that applies to their last life as well. You choose your own executioner because it’s a loving thing to do to shepherd them into their next life or beyond.
Essek feels alienated from and disgusted by the traditions of Luxon worship, and it’s prevented him from even attempting to understand how his mother might see it. Others have pointed out how he has been ignoring her wishes, and this episode really brought that point home.
