The BC Liberals are very worried that the lifestyles of rich and powerful elites living in one the province’s most exclusive neighbourhoods could be at risk.

On Thursday, BC Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson met with members of the West Vancouver Yacht Club to complain about new real estate taxes levied on the province’s super-rich.

MLA Ralph Sultan, meanwhile, apparently had concerns about too many workers in the “barista sector” moving into the neighbourhood.

According to North Shore News, the West Vancouver-Capilano MLA said:

“Good heavens, are we going to have people living in West Vancouver who are employees of Starbucks and that will sustain the economy? I don’t think so.”

Wilkinson also told members of the yacht club, where membership fees range between $3,000 and $15,000 per year, he was concerned the NDP was “identifying demons” by taxing the super-rich.

The British Columbia government has announced the restoration of 10 ferry routes that were chopped in a cost-saving measure in 2014.

Transportation Minister Claire Trevena says for years people living in coastal communities have seen fares rise while services were cut, making it difficult for residents to get around.

The minister says the government has “turned the ship around,” first by rolling back ferry fares on the small coastal routes and now by reversing service cuts.

The government says the changes mean 2,700 round-trip sailings will be restored to coastal communities over the next year, with most new sailings starting this spring.

Another store bites the dust. If this is beginning to sound like a broken record, it’s not the fault of the diamond stylus. It’s just that maybe the record has been played too many times, and people moved on to different formats.

I know. I may be reaching for a metaphor there, because vinyl records have staged a bit of a comeback. But bear with me, please. Go back with me to the early-1980s, when CDs were introduced and all of us cool kids shifted to the shiny little discs. Our records were shoved into deep, dark corners of our closet.

And starting today, we shall assist Payless Shoes in finding its place in the dustbin of retail history, like so many other stores closing up in recent months. It somehow managed to emerge from the first round of bankruptcy by closing 700 stores, but last Friday, it announced it was pulling the plug for good.

And today the liquidation sale begins at the remaining 2100 shops. Better hurry, because I bet shoes will be flying off shelves the next few days.

So what went wrong?

Let’s start with what didn’t go wrong. It’s not that the economy is swirling down the drain, because it most certainly isn’t. The unemployment rate is 4%, and inflation is at 1.6%. It’s not that capitalism failed or anything remotely like it, unless you consider it a failure that capitalism ensures both freedoms: the freedom to win, and the freedom to fail. And finally, it’s not that going barefoot suddenly became fashionable, because restaurants still require us to wear shoes, and I’m pretty sure my boss wouldn’t like it if my feet showed up au naturel.

Here’s what did go wrong. As in most retail genres, there is more supply than there is demand. It is the natural order of things. Every time that happens, someone goes under, because we can only buy and consume so many shoes. Since ours is an individualistic society, and not collectivist, it means we’re not going to lend a hand and do everything to ensure that all survive. You have to make it on your own.

Like the CD that replaced vinyl records, Payless no doubt lost millions of dollars in sales to the likes of Amazon, its subsidiary Zappos, and others. Even though shoes are perhaps the most difficult piece of clothing to find a perfect fit, we the consumers have elected to take our chances anyway, and shop online.

In the brick-and-mortar realm, mass merchandisers like Target and Walmart sell shoes to the same target market Payless serves. And within the genre, there are other chains like ShoeCarnival and DSW offering even more reasons to shop elsewhere, along with an endless supply of sporting goods stores also selling shoes.

Any advantages the company had after its 1956 launch were methodically whittled away by a variety of competitors and a new retail format. Sadly, Payless stayed pretty true to its business model and evolved too slowly, and too late. Payless had become a dinosaur, and the shoe of bankruptcy fits rather well right now.

It’s last call for Payless. They’re down to the final song on this record, and if you waltz on down, you might just make it for the last chorus.

Halifax council voted on Tuesday to declare a climate emergency — a mostly symbolic acknowledgment that climate change is a serious and urgent threat.

The municipality is unlikely to receive additional funds from the provincial or federal governments as a result of the decision, but will use the declaration as an opportunity to stress that climate change is real, while considering how it might implement serious changes to the municipality’s climate change plan.
