These little snippets into Kal’s life during this year and a half alone in space are so evocative; they tell so much using just body language. I wonder what sorts of things he does to cope. Does he daydream, or pace, or read/watch anything Sol’s got stored in his archives? Does he hear the voices of his parents comforting him, imagining they are here with him?
Everything he knows he knows and loves about his homeland is “foreign”; it’s too dangerous to share, he can’t let himself be close to anyone. And this carries through throughout the rest of his life- like in issue #13, when he says “because I showed the world something I cared about. Never do that again. Never again.” There’s some great parallels between Issue #6 and the Battle of Smallville. Both times Kal comes here, the one thing he views as home is ripped from him by Lazarus. The first time, it’s the Kents. The second time, it’s Sol. In issue #12, he calls Sol his “safe place”. His home.
To me, it’s this kid who’s weeping: Kal in Issue #5. He’s realized he’s already failed; it’s already too late. Absolute Kal is taken into the darkest depths of hopelessness and despair and he’s still Superman. Even when there are times he’s completely given up, when he believes this world is impossible to save and he just wants to die and leave it all behind, it doesn’t erase who he is. He doesn’t become evil and start slaughtering everyone and decide to rule the world. He’s still his kind and gentle self, even if he’s angry and broken. Eventually, he keeps going.But right now, he is hopeless.
I feel like some people are misinterpreting Absolute Dinah. I don't really see her as a bland neutral party or reader stand-in at all, and I feel like you have to ignore the majority of her dialogue to interpret her as such?
Dinah spends much of #1 referencing studies showing how much rich people suck. She hates billionaires with a burning passion. She's upset and hates herself so much for resorting to protecting them because she needs to pay for her dad's medication. She doesn't think that the lower classes can do anything about it. She's also against murder. She's also scared that she's happy to see billionaires suffer.
These things can and do coexist. There are so many people who are just like this. You probably know someone like this! Maybe you're like this! So many people are fully aware of how shitty the world is, who hate the assholes with all the power, but don't think we can do anything about it. And yes, are still against murder even if it's the worst people on the planet. She can be against murder and anti-capitalist.
Being against murder doesn't erase everything else she's thought in the last 3 issues. It sure as hell doesn't make her liberal as I've somehow seen people complain. Come on, liberals are NOT that aware. Maybe she was a liberal cop once upon a time, but you think she's one NOW??? Now, she's the pinnacle of disillusionment and working class fatigue!
Maybe by the end of this comic, she will have come around and agreed that murdering billionaires and rapists is good. Maybe she'll remain too afraid of her own bloodlust towards them to go through with it, or stick to her guns in seeing murder as purely bad no matter who does it. Neither makes her political opinions 'lesser' than the (likely male) Green Arrow.
Dinah is an ex-cop who was likely radicalized by something her cop mom did that shook her and her dad. She's a lower class woman who had to quit a job she loved and suck up to rich people to pay for her dad's meds. She dated what seemed to be a fellow socialist who wanted to make the world a better place and they broke up because he cheated on her, and then he became rich. She scrolls on Tiktok to see people's reaction to Slade's death. She consumes online studies about psychology, and theories about her exes' death. She tries so hard to suck it all up and bear it, to hide her true feelings when she's on the job. The first time we see her talk much on the job is in her fight with Mia.
Her and Mia are foils. Mia quotes studies she read online, just like Dinah. She feels the same way as her. She just doesn't hide it the way she does. In fact, she's extremely vocal about it, in real life and online. She even has the same sort of job Dinah used to have and liked. They go off the topic of Oliver's death pretty quickly, because they both know what's really going on here. They don't ignore it. And this conversation instantly leaves Dinah's partner extremely uncomfortable, because he either hasn't realized it or just wants to ignore it. (Genuinely, this moment is my favourite in the series so far)
She's not a generic plot device whose only point is to get radicalized by Green Arrow, tell you that you should be against murder, ease you into the radical message of the story, convince dc to publish the comic, or whatever other excuses people have come up with. She is a full fledged character! Just because the story centers around political messages doesn't mean that the characters in the story aren't written like real people with their own lives and opinions.
And isn't one of the biggest compliments about Abs GA that it portrays the way working class Americans feel about our economic situation really well? Please explain to me why we can't extend this opinion to the female protagonist who is spearheading it.
Maybe, just maybe, you're supposed to pay attention to the protagonists thoughts that are being actively shown to you!

Do you ever think about how it must have felt for Jason to find out exactly how Bruce 'lost it' after his death? I see so many people act like Jason would find it comforting to know that Bruce was a total mess; like that proves he really loved Jason, and if he loved Jason then all else can be forgiven.
But let's look at what Bruce actually did: He got more violent. Specifically, he got more violent with petty criminals, the kind of people who probably turned to crime to survive. People like Jason's father, who Jason loved and admired. Bruce was putting people like Willis in the hospital, and he claims he was doing it for Jason? I don't think that would make him feel more loved. I think that would horrify him, actually.
Why the hell would Bruce think Jason would want that from him? Did he really not know Jason at all? Or did he just not care what Jason would have wanted?
adding my two cents reticently into the nonsense Batman spouts about "taking Jason in as Robin because I saw so much anger and violence in him, and I wanted to steer him right and keep him away from a life of crime.”
I’m not even annoyed or angry about it, my feelings on the matter are best described as sheer bewilderment. holding up a big sign that says "ABSURD." the whole thing is so ridiculous that I just can't wrap my head around it.
look, I’ll be straight with you: I’ve read the story of Jason’s first meeting with Batman. in that scene, and in the ones that followed, I didn't see a single interaction suggests Batman seemed to detect "anger and violence" or a "risk of him becoming a criminal” in Jason. let’s try and take a look at those interactions:
1. the famous scene where Jason steals the tires off the batmobile. damn, the kid’s got the guts. and Batman was clearly amused by it. he literally laughed out loud. when he leaned down and asked if Jason was there to finish the job, he was obviously just teasing him (and look at Jay’s face here god he’s just a baby).
some other people's reactions to him stealing the tires. Ma Gunn was basically like, "this kid is incredible."
2. now Jason is clearly different from Bruce or Dick. even though Bruce kept insisting that Jason was "grieving his parents' deaths" and therefore "needed guidance to get on the right path," Jason had actually been living on his own for a while after his parents died, and he was doing just fine. it’s not exactly an ideal situation for a kid, but look at the way he talks to Batman and tells him about his parents, he isn't lost at all. this kid knows exactly what he's doing. lmao, the one who was actually lost after his parents died was Bruce, and probably Dick. I feel like he just insists everyone else is like that because that’s how he is.
3. when they meet again, Jason makes it clear to Batman that he just wants to do what’s necessary to survive

Batman keeps insisting that this tiny 12-year-old is destined to become a criminal and wreak havoc on the world.
and
Jason pulls off Batman’s signature vanishing act right under his nose. (I love him so much.)
and he even warned Batman about the museum heist.
4. isn’t it just wild– okay, I’ll keep this brief:
thinking Batman wouldn't believe him, he plans to go and stop the robbery all by himself. guys, this amazing, gutsy, brave, strong, ridiculous kid. I can't even express how much I love him. if batman hadn't shown up, what was his plan? stopping Ma Gunn's whole gang solo? it’s hilarious, I love him sm. and he even he sneaks in and out the same way as Batman did. my precious, amazing boy. look at Bruce, he’s clearly incredibly impressed by him. "destined to become a criminal," my ass.
he warned Batman about his blind spot, just like what Robin used to do.

he knocked out that boy on the ground over there. he's cool af.
the smile on his face when he hears Jason’s reply. I can't handle this.
in all the interactions between Jason and Batman before Batman took him in as Robin, I swear I never saw Batman react with anything like, "damn, this kid is a danger, he’s too violent and angry, and he needs me to save him!" even when Jason showed his rough edges like stealing the batmobile's tires, hitting Batman in the gut with a tool, or trying to force him out of his room, Batman seemed more amused than concerned. "man, this kid is awesome," I bet he was thinking. just look at this:
"You little son of a gun--"
it might sound like an expletive, but if you look it up, the phrase actually conveys a mix of astonishment, amusement, praise, teasing, and admiration. here:
basically, what he’s saying translates to, "damn, this kid is really something." it’s pure amusement.
"You are a scrappy one, I’ll say that much of you..."
that phrase can be positive or negative depending on the context, but given what he says next, it’s clearly meant as an expression of approval.
so, it’s obvious he really liked the kid so much and thought he was amazing.
yet when Gordon and Alfred asked why he took Jason on as Robin, this was his answer:
somehow, this is... ridiculously at odds with all the traits/ the impressions Jason displayed during those early interactions I mentioned earlier. I have to admit, I’m baffled. and what he told Gordon was total nonsense. Bruce, have you seen how tall he is? he doesn't even reach your shoulder?
yet Dick, through his persistence and stubbornness, demanded and finally extracted the real answer from Bruce ("how about the truth for a change, Bruce?"):
thank you, Dick.
Bruce: I miss Dick so much, but instead of just call him and have a casual chat like a normal person, I’d do it this way. and since I just admitted I miss him, I’m going to kick him out of my house immediately.
Bruce: I’m lonely and I think Jason is incredibly cool (I find him badass af), but that’s not why I took him in as Robin; I did it for the greater good ("Fighting crime in Gotham city isn't a one-man job") and for justice ("I’m guiding him onto the right path,” “I’m saving his life”).
this guy is like, I miss Dick so much, but I can't accept or handle that feeling, so I’m gonna keep my distance with him because of that and try to push him away.
and then he finds himself liking Jason so much that it bothers him, and he hates that this feeling has become a driving force for him, so he has to pin the blame on Jason. he resents Jason for making him care so deeply, he hates loving him to the point where Jason's death left him utterly devastated, so he lashes out and blames Jason for that wreckage. his mindset is basically “you made me love you too much, and I hate you for it, for making me love you." especially after Jason comes back from the dead haha. It’s truly awful.
and Dick is like, "oh my god, he misses me so much…" totally touched. then bruce basically is like, "please get out of my house," and his face just goes, "seriously, Bruce?" it’s actually pretty funny...
“Oh he missed me 🥺…” -> “Fuck, really Bruce?”
and here’s a little thoughts Alfred has about the whole thing:
oh boy... *smh*
it’s not just because Jason is a kid from Crime Alley that he’s a liar, and it’s not as if every adult is a saint, either. Bruce, the liar, the unreliable narrator, seems to have lied to both others and himself, and genuinely believing what he was saying. *grimace*
I think my biggest problem with New Teen Titans reunions, retreads, and nostalgia bait is how often they just miss the point. Why is Jericho always ignored? Why are the Titans insecure about the JL when that wasn't a thing in the 80s? Why are they written like high schoolers when most of them were college age in the 80s? Why are they treated like they were all kid sidekicks when Kory, Vic, and Raven were never sidekicks. Hell, Gar barely counts in that regard. And even Dick and Donna moved past their sidekick gigs in NTT.
I hope that Absolute Batman's eventual parenthood status is either-
1- he never gets any children (and thus is hopefully safe from some of the abuse apology bs fans do with mainline Bruce)
2- Steph and Duke become his children while Dick, Jason, and Tim permanently remain side antagonists (bc they're the batkids who aren't normally his children)
3- only Cass gets to be his kid (to spite the people who ignore her existence)
4- he somehow adopts a completely different person who is normally someone else's kid (because that would just be hilarious)
WHAT ABOUT ONE OF THE WE ARE ROBIN ROBIN'S (BESIDES DUKE OBVIOUSLY)
You want Batman to have his own Robin that is in no way shape or form similar to any previous sidekick main Bruce has had? Riko. Riko is your girl. Or maybe it would be more fitting for her to be Batgirl? Batgirl Riko???

it is crazy that they just did a full 180 on cassie sandsmark. they took that little tomboy who refused to wear dresses and liked having short hair who had multiple plot points where she was deeply uncomfortable in more girly clothes and just. took that all away and instead made her “grow up” and grow into liking girly things and calling her tomboy phase terrible like why WHY
...okay, I like most of #2, but my opinion on Abs Green Arrow is really going to depend on how the kids are handled. And on whether or not Connor gets revived.
It's pretty clear that he died- I have no hope that he didn't. But do keep in mind- we know for a fact that #4 introduces Solomon Grundy. He died and was revived in the mainline, and there's clearly something fucked up going on with this one too. Just look at him. I can very much see Dinah coming across a way to revive Connor on The Island (tm) or something, and bringing him back. Just, please don't make him stay dead for the love of god.
And I'm really hoping that Dinah is referring to Roy and Mia as Oliver's "friends" because she doesn't know he adopted them, and not because he didn't adopt them. If you kill the poc kid off immediately and then claim that he was Oliver's only kid because the other two were adopted, that's just fucking all 3 of them over.
Mia saying that Oliver gave her a family gives me some hope, though. Love what we have seen of her so far. That fight scene between her and Dinah was fucking awesome. 10/10 characterization.
I'm also a bit worried that they're going to completely remove Roy's Navajo origins. Please don't reference an insanely obscure character like Tom Hallaway and then conveniently 'forget' about this.

Do I wish I was represented in comics more? Yes. Yes I do. Do I know why we’re not mainstream like other heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman? Yes! Yes I do.
It’s because when we do get comics with Black leads. WE DO NOT READ THEM even in the black community. So why are we still complaining when what do get, we still dismiss? Absolute Green Lantern? Least talked about of the absolute universe, always in stock at comic stores. We have been given these mini series as little taste tests of what COULD be.
But guess what? They do not sell. And why would DC spend the money and resources to lose money on a comic? If we actually wanted to get these black characters back into the mainline comics PLEASE GO BUY BACK ISSUES! TPB’S! ANYTHING. they will see that people want these characters back.
We’ve seen it with the revival of Blade with marvel. He came back. People learned his name through marvel rivals and Deadpool and Wolverine, realized woah this guy is a badass let me go check out his old runs. Now he’s got a dc collab with supergirl, and he’s going to have a comic with moon knight coming out in July.
If you don’t get what I’m saying. People need to be recommending the comic runs with the black characters that we want to see make a comeback.
I really want people to realize these decisions ultimately are decided by the people who comics are catered to. Comics thst get longer series are the ones that we talk about. That sell. The ones that get cancelled and cut short are the ones that are going negative. Ones that readers ignore. So if we want to see more representation we have to make it clear we want it and also SUPPORT WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE.
Because I can guarantee a lot of these people participating in this blackout haven’t purchased an issue with a black main character. And haven’t even thought about it. They just saw a social justice movement and hopped on the bandwagon. It’s truly a psychological concept of the bandwagon fallacy which I can see in how people are approaching this topic.
In the end. Yes we should be getting more representation. But also we have to do our part as consumers to make it clear that we are interested in reading these stories by going back and reading what has already been given to us. DC won’t give us a whole new mainline series just because people are talking about wanting one. You need to actually prove it. Go out and read absolute Green Lantern. Go pick up the old Mr. Terrific run. Recommend these to your friends.
TDLR: this boycott actively did more harm to the black comic community than good
i’m AMM10 posting again but idc. i wanted to elaborate on agent rainbow being a "bad ending" for john like i mentioned in the tags of another post. what i meant by this is john is becoming the man rainbow used to be. his mind is expanding, he's learning more about the world and its injustices, he’s leaving behind the sense of white complacency he was trapped in, he's becoming a leftist in principle. however, if he continues on the trajectory that despair-the-zero sets him on (assuming he doesn't swerve into traffic or eat his pistol like it keeps suggesting), he'll probably end up back at his job with the bureau and give up all the idealism that the green martian inspired in him. rainbow agrees with D-O in thinking that this is all just a phase. he's been there before. it's why he keeps trying to talk to him. he's trying to get through to john, he's trying to make him see the way he sees. he hates that john is like this because deep down, john reminds him of a version of himself when he actually stood for something.
