The African or Rhombic egg-eating snake (Dasypeltis scabra) has always been so cool to me because of three reasons:
1) diet: egg-eater snakes eat, as you may have guessed, small eggs (still usually about double the size of the snake’s head). They eat the egg whole, puncturing it with specialized inner needles of their vertebrae and letting the egg’s contents pass on to the stomach while the shell is crushed and regurgitated as a single pellet of sorts. To eat the egg, they have no teeth, rather using ridges to keep the egg inside, as well as a stretchy sort of esophagus and dislocating jaw.
2) Appearance: with raised scales and a wide variety of wild morphs (‘morph’ defines different appearance characteristics of individuals within the same species) they’re super pretty! They also have that lovely snake eye that just makes them pop even more!
3) LOOK AT THIS DEFENSIVE DISPLAY???? (Note: this display should not be sought after, as it requires inducing significant stress to the snake! This video was captured of an adult wild egg eater’s defensive display for educational purposes by an organization which, for all I can tell, is an accredited snake awareness organization)
As you can see, not only does the snake puff out its jaw to appear bigger and replicate the head of a venomous snake, but it also does this hypnotic self-coiling thing which rubs its raised scales against each other - leading to a sort of rattle or hiss! This behavior serves two purposes in the wild - to confuse a predator about where the snake’s body actually is, and replicate the sound, appearance, and overall defensive habits of venomous snakes in the area, such as the puff adder!
In the pet trade:
Egg eaters are relatively well-liked by some snake owners as a non-venomous low-humidity and unique species to keep, so there are many in the pet trade. The allure of not having to provide frozen or live rodents may make them quite a tempting option, as they seem to do well on a diet of quail or other smaller eggs in captivity. However, do be aware before you purchase: many are wild-caught, as captive breeding this species has proven difficult. While egg-eaters are perhaps the least likely of any wild-caught species to carry the usual fungi and bacterial issues that primarily contribute to the discouragement of keeping wild-caught snakes, as well as having no teeth to bite with lowering the risk of dangerous bites, I would still personally exercise great caution with this species.
