This year among all years it is more important than ever to celebrate our culture and our background, as well as to recognise the struggles that our families went through to settle in a new land in order to create a better life for us.I know you’re reading the news and you’ve seen the stares on the street. I know how hard you try to suppress a cough if you choke on a piece of food, for fear of being ostracised. I know that you worry for your own safety because of all the hateful and xenophobic rhetoric that seems to be louder than ever.This month for me is about reaching out to each and every one of you and letting you know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. In fact, YOU BELONG EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE. This month is about standing strong, continuing to fight and not letting hateful, ignorant people rob you of your inner pride. Let’s continue to call out racism and prejudice in all its forms (yes, even amongst ourselves) and demand accountability for those who attack us. Let’s continue to step up and show support for our frontline healthcare workers and our communities. Most importantly, let’s reach out to one another and realise just how powerful we are when we are united.This month is not a month for hiding or being afraid. This month is about celebrating who we are alongside our friends and allies.To that end, have an AWESOME May! I love you all dearly.
