“That may be blasphemous.” Joe said, but his voice was light. He was warm, compared to the chilled weather of a steadily cooling Massachusetts, in a button down and a sweater and a rosary wrapped around the knuckles of his scarred right hand. That same hand caught George’s hip, stopping the swing entirely. George leaned into him.

“Everything’s blasphemous, Joseph. That’s why the bible is more of a suggested guideline, I think.”

Joe’s huff was heated and soft against his temple, ruffling his hair. George heard the echo of thunder in his head, and then the actual lightning strike maybe ten seconds later. “And the Church thinks that you’re God’s gift.”

George tilted his head back against his shoulder as the rain began to fall, and cool droplets fell to his face and down his cheeks as Joe dropped his mouth to his forehead. “So do you.”

“Alright.” George said, eyes closed as he regained his balance. He rolled his good shoulder with an exhale, glanced out the window. “We've got four hours. That ain’t bad.” He caught Toye’s gaze again, the other strangely drawing, and tilted his head at him. “Let’s hope you’re good backup.”

Toye raised an eyebrow at him, but looked down first, went back to carving.

That alone, in a way, was new. George couldn’t remember the last time he hadn’t been the first to look away from someone.
