He's heard the legends of whales, of course. Every mer has. Jimin is taken from his home, and finds Taehyung waiting for him.

That’s how it starts.

Yoongi clears his throat. “...Number three: Jeon Jungkook must give me a compliment every day from now on,” he says after a beat. “To practice.” Jungkook flushes even harder.

“Hyung!”

“No, no it’s been spoken to the æther now. My rules are law, Jungkook,” Yoongi shrugs.

The first few times Namjoon received emails claiming he was betrothed to the Crown Prince of South Korea, he just laughed it off. Now that he’s in med school and barely has time for anything, though, it isn’t funny anymore. When said Crown Prince actually shows up outside his dorm one day, Namjoon doesn’t know what to do.

For Jeongguk, the answer’s simple enough: get married so they can both get on with their lives. This is just another thing he has to do as a royal. Who cares if he’s not getting married for love? At the very least maybe he and Namjoon can be friends like they used to be, an impossibly long time ago that Namjoon barely remembers.

Namjoon thinks he could work with that, being friends who are fake-real husbands. It should be easy, right?

Namjoon didn’t intend to get lost when he and his friends decided to hike Taebaeksan. He didn’t mean to stumble upon the cave, or the sleeping, golden-hued man within. And he certainly didn’t plan on waking that man up, taking him home, and falling in love.

Or, Namjoon finds a dormant god in a mountain, and then, half on accident, wakes him up.

Yoongi works at a convenience store, and Namjoon is very forgetful.

The thing about having a crush on Jung Hoseok is that it’s mostly a mental exercise, Jin reasons. Like solving Arithmancy problems in your head or dealing with the riddles to the Ravenclaw dorm portrait, theoretical weights to keep your mind sharp and ready. Nothing is every supposed to actually come of it. 

So when Hoseok asks him out, it comes as a real shock.

The stranger quirks a smile, his eyes twinkling a little. He’s very cute, actually, but Jimin is hardly concerned with that right now.

“Aren’t you going to introduce me?” the man asks expectantly, glancing at Hyungsik.

“Of course,” Jimin says, turning to face Hyungsik. “How rude of me. Hyungsik, this is my boyfriend.”

The corners of his mouth twitch. “What?”

“Yes,” Jimin repeats. “My boyfriend. His name is...” Jimin finds the stranger’s foot with his own and steps on it gently, crushing the toe of his chunky sneaker under his Chelsea boot.

“Jungkook,” the man says, and it sounds like he’s choking back a laugh. “My name is Jungkook.”

Namjoon knows the ocean. Yoongi is like the tide, pulling him in, pushing him away. Just like the sea, dangerous and beautiful, dragging him under until Namjoon can’t seem to come up for breath, isn’t sure he wants to.

Namjoon is a marine biologist at the local aquarium, infatuated with the man who comes in to sketch in front of the big tanks. 

Jin accidentally likes one of Hoseok’s instagram posts from two years ago. 

it’s commonly believed that one’s hair color changes according to their soulmate’s mood. yoongi believes in soulmates, and namjoon doesn’t.

or, it takes ten years, the rest of the members’ intervention, and the literal universe leaving them signs for namjoon and yoongi to talk about their feelings.
