It’s supposed to be easy. Hating him.

At least that’s what she keeps telling herself.

But hating Blaine is getting and harder and harder, especially when he’s like this. When he makes her laugh until there are tears in her eyes and she can’t breathe. When his touch is too gentle and every horrible name she can think of vanishes the moment their lips crash into each other. When he looks at her – really looks at her and makes her forget even the most prying eyes could be watching if they aren’t careful.

Then when it’s all over, she remembers. She remembers her mother’s painful warnings and her rather precarious circumstances before the guilt starts to sink in. The guilt that chews and eats her up inside and like stale gum – all she wants is for it to spit her back out.

Ryan’s eyes goes to the slim watch by her wrist as Blaine presses a kiss into her naked shoulder. It’s soft and gentle, like he’s being right now. Which doesn’t help, not at all. Not when she’s supposed to be far, far away from him.

Esther sipped moodily at her non-alcoholic cocktail. She was under strict orders from her mother to not touch a single drop of anything stronger than soda for the whole evening, and judging by the way it was going, the task was going to be a lot harder than it should be.

It’s not like the event itself was to blame.

The ballroom was decorated in flags from each country on the continent, and delicacies of each country were presented, sprawling, on banquet tables on one side of the room. A large space had been cleared for dancing at the center of the space, and clustered like floral bouquets against the far walls were silk-draped tables with matching chairs. 

It was hard for it to not feel almost prison-like, though, with all of the cameramen circling the room like vultures, snapping sly pictures of all the attendees.

Esther tried to ignore the lenses pointed in her direction. She knew what they were after. Almost instinctually, she raised her dark eyes from the sugary drink in her hand to the opposite side of the dance floor, where Blaine Hayes stood. He looked absolutely amazing in a perfectly tailored suit–dark green velvet with a cream silk shirt beneath, unbuttoned a little more than was appropriate for such an event.

“No no – you’re doing the impression all wrong.” Her feet dangles on the edge of the roof as she mimics their etiquette teacher’s lesson earlier that week. The lesson was great to be fair, but the delivery leaves something less than desired by her standards. “The accent has to be a little more of like – like a drawl, like thissss.” She keeps her tone low and husky, reveling in the words and barely managing some semblance of the accent before Blake erupts in a fit of laughter.
