This was the crossword puzzle in the New York Times yesterday.Â
Tausigâs crossword is a so-called SchrĂśdinger puzzle, named for the physicistâs hypothetical cat that is at once both alive and dead. In a SchrĂśdinger puzzle, select squares have more than one correct letter answer: They exist in two states at once. âBlack Halloween animal,â for example, could be both BAT or CAT, yielding two different but perfectly correct puzzles. Only 10 such puzzles have now been published in Times history.
Itâs the theme of Tausigâs puzzle, though, that makes it special. Four entries in Thursdayâs crossword can include either an âFâ or an âM.â Both are correct; neither is wrong. For example, âPart of a houseâ can be either ROOF or ROOM. The long ârevealerâ answer, tying those select entries together and spanning 11 squares smack-dab in the middle of the puzzle, is GENDER FLUID.
This puzzle, with âMâs and âFâs that arenât fixed, is a masterful blend of subject and structure. âIt potentially really evokes what gender fluidity is, which is not moving back and forth between two poles, but actually not being committed to either pole, and potentially existing in many states at different times,â Tausig said.
This is ⌠really cool.
i never really thought of crossword puzzles as an art form, but like⌠this is art.

You're going to start hearing a lot about migrants from Morocco and Ceuta. Morocco's government is a keen ally to the US and Israel, while Spain has taken an anti-genocide stance, and the USrael wants to punish them for this.
Since Spain is part of the EU it cannot be traded with individually, it is part of a bloc with the rest of the EU, but Trump wants to sanction them for their anti-genocide position and he wants to use his favourite tool: tariffs.
The demonstrably easiest way to get public support for a country getting out of the EU is to instigate white people's fear of brown migrants. The UK is still ripping itself apart over the amount of racist propaganda it generated and consumed for Brexit. Shoving (allegedly) 50,000 African migrants into Spanish territory will cause this panic.
As climate change destroys more ecosystems and displaces more people you must expect the weaponization of migrants, and you must remember each of them is a human being who has rights and does not deserve to be used as a pawn in a game played by the richest people alive; just like you.

i think a lot of people have parsed the idea of a "male loneliness crisis" as being specifically about men struggling to find romantic companionship. i think that's often not what men mean when they say it. and i see people talk past each other because of it
i actually do believe that many men are lonely in a gendered way. i think they have accurately identified an issue. socially approved male behavior kind of requires men to be shitty friends
they have no use for women they don't want to fuck, and female "friends" they can't fuck get dropped pretty fast. so about 50% of the population is written off by default
and then they can't be too emotional or too intimate with their male friends, lest they be perceived as feminine or gay by male peers. so the friendships they do allow themselves to have are rather shallow
it's just that this is a self-inflicted problem. and moreover, it's a problem rooted in the idea that it's better for men to suffer in this way than to be perceived/treated as a woman or a gay man (i.e. inferiors)
the way to end the male loneliness crisis would be for men to choose to be good friends to the people around them. and if they don't want to do that, well.
this is not to say that women and other non-men don't suffer from loneliness â there are broader social factors driving loneliness in general â but i do actually think men are correct when they say that their gender plays a role in their loneliness
it's just that they hate us more than they want to be happy and loved
Picked some magnolia petals and discovered as they started to wilt at creases they turned a beautiful warm brown color. Then got the idea to use a silverpoint stylus to scratch a magnolia drawing into the petal~ smells divine

i identify so much with this
I think people need to understand that everyone has to unlearn misogynistic behaviors and thinking patterns. Cis women and trans women and cis men and trans men and anyone who doesnât fall under those categories are all completely capable of being misogynistic and actively hurtful to women. Trans men are included in this, obviously, but when you only call for trans men to unlearn this mindset, you are no longer being progressive and fair. You are singling out a minority.
it pisses me off to see cis women saying 'trans women are misogynistic because they were raised as men' and trans women replying 'no we aren't because no we weren't!' and i'm sitting there staring at the camera like it's the office. because like women are ALL raised to be just as misogynistic as men. it's a notable goddamn feature of the patriarchy.
like if you are marginalized it is in your own self-interest to interrogate and deconstruct the cultural narratives that position you as subnormal. this is what starts a lot of queer people on wanting to reform the world into something more compassionate and egalitarian.
but it's not the marginalization that makes you any more or less ethical than anyone else. it's the work. you gotta do the actual work.
I feel like part of the problem is a really popular misunderstanding of bigotry.
Misogyny is not just prejudice experienced by a woman. It is not simply something that happens TO a woman. It has nothing to do with the woman. Itâs about the misogynist.
Bigotry is not determined or defined by the target of that bigotry. The bigotry is stored in the bigot.
Misogynists will be misogynistic towards any person they associate with femininity, including cisgender men.
When a misogynist cis man tears another man down for liking something he thinks is girly, he is still being misogynistic.
A cis male coach telling his cis male student he runs like a girl is being misogynistic.
A cis woman punishing her son for wanting a âgirlâ toy or policing her boyfriendâs hygiene habits and interests for anything she considers emasculating, is being misogynistic!
When a woman gets in a car accident and is injured more severely because the safety testing on that car was only done using crash test dummies and models based on men, sheâs experiencing misogyny.
When the medication she takes for her injuries doesnât work right or has unexpected side effects because it was only tested on men, sheâs experiencing misogyny.
When the tools she uses at work that are the wrong shape for her hands, and the jumpsuit thatâs part of her uniform which she has to take off completely to use the bathroom, and all the spaces she moves through and everything within them are designed with the assumption that an average male body is the only body that mattersâ she is experiencing misogyny.
Misogyny is the belief that women are inherently inferior, and the systems and institutions built around that belief. It can be experienced by anyone, and anyone is capable of having misogynistic beliefs and doing misogynistic things.
Bigotry is not about the target. Itâs about the bigot, and what the bigot believes, and the way those bigoted beliefs have shaped our world.
I donât care what race gender or sexuality you are, you were raised with racist, sexist, homophobic beliefs. Because itâs literally impossible not to be.
And the harder you try to cling to the idea that misogyny is something that happens TO women, rather than something coming FROM misogynists, the more blind youâll be to your own misogynistic beliefs, and all the ways everything in our society is a product of or directly reinforces those beliefs.
And like, it's not something to get defensive over. We've all been picking up biases like malware our entire lives. They are running in the background, possibly unnoticed most of the time. Being made aware of our biases just allows us the opportunity to remove part of the problematic programing. Unfortunately, the process is life long. Every day, the world we live in tries to sneak more of them into our brain. Some can't be removed completely so we have to be conscious of them and actively counteract them when they rear their heads.
The thing is, everyone has to deal with this. It's not like the malware only targets bad people. It's indiscriminate, hoping to find a bad person who will embrace it and help it propagate. If you are made aware of it and make the conscious decision to let it stay, that is a reflection on your character, not someone pointing it out.
Being made aware of our biases shouldn't be any more insulting than someone pointing out you have something stuck between your teeth, or that the hem of your skirt is tucked into your underwear. Embarrassing maybe, but easily fixable. And like those things, the best way to prevent other people from having to call out our biases is to look in a mirror more regularly.
