The Wicked + The Divine Readers Poll 2016
Hullo.
As there’s so few large polls done by comic readers, I suspect this may be passed around a little further than the standard The Wicked + The Divine editorial piece, so I’m providing a little context. The Wicked + the Divine is Jamie McKelvie, Matt Wilson and my own Image comic. We found ourselves wondering exactly who was reading the book, or at least who our core readership was. We provided a link to a google survey in issue 19 and asked our readers a bunch of questions, some serious, some less so. The response was pretty impressive – 1500 or so readers responded. The survey is pretty hefty, and includes demographics, comic purchasing habits (including piracy), WicDiv related trivia and a lot of fucking around. I did a write up of the core results in the back of issue 21, which came out last week, and promised a wider look at the data to follow.
You’re reading it.

“Why I Wasn’t Contracted to Write Beauty and the Beast” by I have no idea who, and desperately want to know. If anyone does, please tell me! Edit: Through knmajorblogs I have discovered the genius behind this piece of art. The genius in question is LordJazor ! Thank you!
Caption: [narrated by a deep voice worthy of Morgan Freeman with generic fairy tale music playing in the background]
“Once upon a time, in a faraway land, the young prince lived in a shining castle. Although he had everything his heart desired, the prince was an absolute douche canoe.
“But then, one winter’s night, the ugliest human you have ever seen, short of the two penny crap you see in movies like Underworld or whatever, came to the castle and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold.
“After evacuating his bowels for four minutes, the prince sneered at the gift and told the CGI mishap to get fucked. But she warned him, not to be such an apocalyptic fuckhat to strangers and that beauty is found within.
“In an effort to be slightly more polite but failing miserably, he told her to crawl in the nearest hole and roll about in it screaming, ‘north north squig.’ But instead, the old woman’s ugliness melted away, and she was hella fine.
“The prince bitched his face right off. But it was too late, for she has seen that he really was a fuck. And as punishment she transformed him into an Ozzy Osborne mistake and placed a powerful spell on the castle and all who lived there.
“Ashamed of his now seemingly odd but not necessarily completely disarming appearance, the Beast concealed himself inside his castle with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world. Because cellphone signal didn’t do a wad of shit in the mountains and there wasn’t a cell phone tower for like, bunches of years.
“The rose, the aforementioned tricky bent had offered was truly enchanted as all get out, which would bloom until he was finally legally able to guzzle wine like tomorrow’s a dream, if he could learn to not be a pile of indigestible fuck, and could find someone who would at least clean up after his constant mess by the time the last petal fell. Then, the spell will be broken.
“If not, well…you know…stuff.
“As the years passed, he fell down the stairs…”
[sounds of screaming and falling down the stairs]
“Oh, I’m sorry, into despair, and lost all hope for who could ever learn to love such a cock waffle.”
“ [sounds of screaming and falling down the st–”
that’s a goddamned Goofy Holler, you better represent

Looking for books to read while waiting for the next Wicked and Divine issue/volume, and wondering if you have any recs -- either things in the same vein, or things which you think everyone/all (well, aspiring) writers should read. I adore WicDiv, and I loved your Loki: Agent of Asgard and Young Avengers. I'm also a huge fan of Bill Willingham's Fables and Mike Carey's Lucifer, if that helps.
I’m in an enormous rush so can’t give this a proper answer now - I may actually reblog it with some more thoughts - so I’ll throw some random ideas here and everyone should reblog to chip their own thoughts in.
(I actually thought about doing a reading group during the hiatus, doing a THIS IS A GOOD THING TO READ every week. Alas, I was too busy)
I’ll keep this mainly in the same vein rather than general work.
Well, to state the obvious - have you gone back to my JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY run? I didn’t write Agent of Asgard, so I suspect you may have typoed, and already have read it, but I have to say it, just in case.
Also to state the obvious: Sandman. That’s very obvious, but I have to say it, relevant to what you’ve said.
ENIGMA. Huge influence on Young Avengers and a lot of the works on identity and sexuality that bubbles through a lot of my work.
I KILL GIANTS - the other huge influence on Young Avengers. Looking at the spine can make me tearful. Astounding.
THE WRENCHIES - Basically, this is the book we wanted Young Avengers to be. Just diseased teenage superhero metaphors, and astoundingly beautiful.
THE INVISIBLES - Classic 00s Vertigo and generational book. Influential on my own fractal storytelling style, in that you basically have to keep all the issue sin your head simultaneously to get what’s going on. I suspect it doesn’t all hold up now, but it’s got LITERALLY EVERYTHING IN IT.
KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND - Morrison’s most pop book, and the one which the serious Morrison critics always hate. They couldn’t be more wrong.
CASANOVA - The brothers’ Ba and Moon, and Fraction’s piece of glorious pop art. Basically, in my head, it’s REED RICHARDS to Jamie and My DOCTOR DOOM-y PHONOGRAM.
Actually, I haven’t mentioned PHONOGRAM. Third volume out next week, but start with the second. WicDiv’s weird uncle.
How much Moore have you read? At least read WATCHMEN and FROM HELL.
UZUMAKI. Probably my favourite Horror book of all time.
DOMU. Out of print, damn the world. I return to this far more than I return to AKIRA.
NEXTWAVE. I suspect there’s some of this in my head when I was thinking of YA. I half wonder if Warren/Stuart had invented the 2010s slipstream comics with this mashing of Scott Pilgrim videogame logic into the Marvel Universe.
Actually, SCOTT PILGRIM. BLUE MONDAY. HOPELESS SAVAGES. If they didn’t exist, we wouldn’t either.
NIMONA.
FINDER! Get yourself some FINDER. The two big collected volumes are perfect, and it’s still going on.
METABARONS. My favourite fucked up thing, ever. I will process my love of Metabarons somewhere eventually (LUDOCRATS, to be honest).
That’ll do for now.
Oh, and WE3.
I had no idea this even existed, but it’s quite fantastic! It’s a segment from the NHK series Shojo comic o kaku about drawing shojo manga, where they visit a new manga artist in every episode and film them drawing. These 12 segments are up on youtube:
Hagio Moto (above)
Takemiya Keiko
Ichijo Yukari
Miuchi Suzue
Ikeda Riyoko
Yamato Waki
Morita Jun
Shoji Yoko
Takaguchi Satosumi
Yoshida Mayumi
Asagiri Yu
Yachi Emiko and Tominaga Hiromi
The commentator is Satonaka Machiko, herself a legendary manga artist.
