He is unbashed and annoying which makes it easy to overlook the fact that he would sacrifice what he wants for his friends. He wanted Thame to go to Korea but saying it directly would have never worked out so he sacrificed being the good guy and decided to let go of his friend (a friend he definitely liked enough to be protective of in his own silent ways) by acting like he too doesn't want to be a part of the group. There are layers to his care that remain unseen, unshown and they're done so nonchalantly that it's unnoticed as he continues to act his bit.

This is why it's so easy to misunderstand him. We as viewers are also seeing only to the extent he is allowing us to. We don't know him the way Thame does and so, like Po in the beginning, we misunderstand where he is coming from.

He too doesn't want to like the same person as Thame, he knows Thame feels something for Po, he knows that Po likes Thame and no matter what he does, he has been aware of his place from the beginning. He knew this was coming but that doesn't mean it's easy. Which is why he put up a fight. but when he knows that the feelings are mutual, he immediately steps back, more deeply aware of the line than ever.

Even if it leads to his own heartbreak, he will do it for his friend. that's the kind of person be is and he continues to be.
