Hyperfixation coming back FULL FORCE

I don’t have the words to describe how much I love this movie, and how much it means to me as an autistic person.

I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it was so unapologetically weird and cringe and the most perfect imperfect piece of media I’ve ever seen. When I first saw the clip on tik tok that convinced me to watch it, I knew I was going to identify with Patty. But I wasn’t prepared for how hard her character and the way she was treated (the good and the bad) was going to hit me. It brought up a lot of feelings I wasn’t prepared for, but ultimately helped improve how I view myself, the people who care about me, and my autism.

I watched this movie with my girlfriend (who’s gonna add her thoughts later), and it helped convey a lot of feelings I’ve had towards myself for a very long time. It helped her understand aspects of me a better than she did before. This movie truly brought us closer and impacted us in a way neither of us were expecting.

Emily Skeggs is a phenomenal actress who did a perfect job at portraying an AFAB person with autism, at moments i forgot I was watching a person acting. The director Adam Rehmeier did a phenomenal job portraying how autistic people can be treated by our families, and by strangers. How we can be treated as if we’re “subhuman”.

I could go on about every little detail of this unconventional love story. Dinner in America is going to stick with me for a very, very long time. I’ve never been able to pick a definite number one favorite of anything, especially media. But Dinner in America is going to be my answer every single time.
