Heâs awake now. God, that chilled Shiloh right through to her bones, the way Lief said it so nonchalantly, the rattling of the cage door ceasing, the other girl scrambling back up the silks to hang from above. There was a rumbling, something that was less a sound and more a vibration, every nerve in Shilohâs body on high alert, adrenaline and fear flooding through her veins. Something was moving, something was coming. The other girl kept talking, Shiloh trying to plan an escape, but she could barely remember the path sheâd taken here, which tent had she turned at? Where was the entrance? How long had she been here? Everything in her screamed to run, but she didnât know where. In a rash decision, one she hoped she wouldnât regret later, she grabbed the key to the lock, swiftly unlocking the cage and letting herself in, slamming the cage door closed and pushing the lock back into position, the key tucked in her pocket. Shiloh figured sheâd rather take her chances with Lief, rather than whatever was out there. âWho are you?â
lief watched, silent, as shiloh panicked. it amused her in a sense. how silly !! was she afraid of liefâs father ?? the ringmaster wasnât to be trifled with, no, but he was a nice man. to lief at least. something that couldnât be expressed or understood was how lief saw the world around her. despite the clouds rolling in outside, if you asked her the birds were singing and it was sunny like always. she could hear the chatter of circus workers starting the machines and rides up and hear the music getting louder. if shiloh wanted to believe, sheâd probably see and hear it too.   â i told you my name. i donât know what you want me to say. â   cradled in a hammock, she curled her fingers around a silk and moved it to brush against shiloh.   â do you wanna come sit up here with me ?? i can teach you how to climb ~ â   though she made no move to come down and meet the other, she peered precariously over the edge. this girl was acting so very strange.
