It really is one of the best examples of them compounding. Cause when I was in a really bad spot housing wise, a few times I applied to those anyway and made a point about being like "oh I'm afab" and it felt so fucking gross. But I didn't wanna be homeless. So I made myself uncomfortable (and for nothing as it turned out, I would not do the same thing again if I went back in time)

But even then, and even more now, I was so conscious of the fact that, as uncomfortable and gross as it felt.... It was an option. And if I was a trans woman, no matter how desperate I was, it would not BE an option. It's a way of understanding privilege more people need to take on IMO, cause it's not about whether or not I think of it as a privilege. Course I dont. That's not the point.

found family? the kid not feeling safe in their house? the adult wanting to help? family / teacher / school isn't always a guaranteed safe place. should the kid and adult each have friends that are their own age too? sure. but if their friendship is genuinely innocent then I think the problem isn't them but people who project their weird and predatory thoughts onto them

The thing that makes it weird is the "best" friend. If it's just friends ok, but best friends requires some form of equality.

Like theres no question the kid could go to the adult with their problems or if they need help, but you can't expect a kid to deal with an adults problems and/or be their emotional support.

Being best friends doesn't just involve having fun together, its helping each other as well.

imo "best friend" isn't necessarily always about someone you can reply on emotionally or someone you must share your experience or your trauma with. if you have a good time and are comfortable with their presence then you can consider them your best friend. that's why I voted not weird or predatory.

Western passport holders will never understand. To go anywhere with a third worlder passport like a Filipino one, you need your tax returns, certificate of employment, bank statements, marriage certificates, sometimes a recommendation from a citizen of the country you want to travel to, everything possible to prove that you have a job and a family at home and you're not planning to be an illegal immigrant, JUST to get hit with a rejection because the embassy didn't believe you had enough proof.

Did you have travel plans? Already booked the plane tickets and hotels? Fuck you, better hope they issue refunds (they don't).

Americans and Western Europeans will never understand how insanely hard and bothersome it's to travel anywhere with a weak passport, let alone immigrate.

You want to study abroad? Show us proof that there is a quadrillion dollars in your bank account. Oh, an average monthly salary in your country is $400 and you plan to work when you arrive? You can't do that, silly, a student visa only allows you to work 2 hours every third Wednesday, and if we find out that you're working a second more we will deport you.

You want to work abroad? Better be a programmer, then of course you are welcome. Doctor, scientist, white-collar or, god forbid, blue-collar worker? You can fuck right off, your visa application goes straght into trash.

But if you marry one of our first-world citizens, then fine, you can come. Because we can't upset them, after all, they are a real person, unlike you.

EU Advice to people who have friends in places with weak passports- go to your department of foreigners and ask for something that called Formal Letter of Invitation or something similar. It usually is called something similar and costs a few euro/whatever currency you have. It will not be more than a fancy coffee at Starbucks or such place.

You will have to prove that you can afford a guest, have some income and also usually take responsibility for possible deportation cost.

But if you really are inviting a friend over, they will give you a formal document you can send to your friend. Then the friend applies for a visa while attaching the Very Official document with it. They will get the Schengen visa and most probably will get it expedited too.

It's some effort, but if it's for a friend it's worth it. And it's way less costly than the ridiculous loops the friend is being forced to go through and pay for multiple 3rd party services just to get a freaking visa for a month.

A conversation I don’t think yall are ready for yet is that you can love a character sooooo much and relate to them and see yourself in them but at the end of the day they’re still fake and that’s why someone else’s take on them or headcanon about them isn’t a direct message about you or insult to your identity. If your identity is so wrapped up in a character that you can’t distinguish between reality and fiction, then you are the problem. Not some random person online who interprets the character differently than you.

This is kind of why I think we should replace language around gender socialization with something like "Patriarchal Socialization" or "Misogynist Socialization". I think the language of male/female socialization is oppositional sexism obscuring the actual phenomenon: That these lessons that are taught to children are taught to ALL of the children regardless of their asab. Our society tells both boy and girls that women are lesser than men, and all of the misogynistic methods of control that follows. There is this impression that they get siloed off into separate institutions of sexism like there is a Man classroom and a Woman classroom and the students never interact until adulthood, when in reality everyone is being taught the same material.

This is also why the gender dynamics of broader cis society still recreate themselves in trans spaces. It's why many trans women, myself included, would tell you that patriarchy did not feel welcoming to us as children even when we didn't know we were trans yet. I heard the message "Women are lesser than men" and my child reaction was terror at the idea of "being caught" enjoying femininity. (I've also had realizations over the years that my parents definitely extended less of the benefits of patriarchy to me than they did my brother which I don't have time to get into right now)

The reason the term "male socialization" brings all of the twerfs out of the woodwork, is that the term itself isn't actually describing what is actually happening. EVERYONE is "socialized male" and EVERYONE is "socialized female", but some people are treated as men, and some are treated as women. We aren't socialized by gender, we are socialized by misogyny.
