i know ppl have been saying this, but fmab truly has some of the best female characters in anime, if not television in general. girls who fight, girls who dont fight, women in stem, war criminals, housewives, demons, women in relationships, single women, old lady spies, precious little girls, princesses, ninjas, hopeful women, cynical women, kind women, callous women, women with children, women without children, soldiers, civilians
there isnt one kind of ‘strong female character’, and every female character has their own past and goals and motivations
i know a lot of people are going to say “well yeah fma was written by a woman!” and obviously thats part of it, but theres a lot of media written by women with shallow writing of their female characters, especially in shounen anime. there isnt even any fan service, which is crazy to be so appreciative of because really its such a weird, gross thing to have become so normalised, but still. its all so refreshing
dont get me wrong, the show has great character writing in general. but lots of shows have well written, complicated, unique men. to do it with women as well makes it really stand out
