I can actually tell a story relating to this:
Last December my aunt and uncle asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I had only directly outed myself to my parents, brothers, and grandma then but I thought "let them figure it out." So I asked them for a lesbian pride flag thinking they'd get it from context.
Now last week during winter break I was spending the week at my grandma's when my uncle calls, after talking with my grandma for a while she gives me the phone.
Our conversation started like this:
U: "Have you hung up your flag yet?"
Me: "No I haven't found the right space yet."
U: "How did your dad react?"
Me, getting a bit confused because of course I would tell my dad something like this: "well he was already cool with it when I told him."
U, gasping: "Wait you're actually gay? Like for sure? You're a lesbian?"
Me, laughing inside: "yes that's why I wanted a pride flag."
U, sounding a bit ashamed: "I thought you wanted to provoke your dad."
After that he kept talking till I just gave the phone back to my grandma because he was talking himself deeper into the shit but anyway they had a short conversation about it too because I mentioned who I had told.
U, sounding kinda angry: "Why didn't you tell me?"
G: "Because it's not my place."
My grandma told him It's not my place and if she wasn't already my favourite person in the whole fucking world she wouldn't become it right then and there because she did not just immediately accept me unconditionally when I told her even though she lived with freaking nuns for years in boarding school and is the most religious person I know but she also without me saying anything understood that this was something personal for me and it was for me to tell others.
Now I wouldn't have cared but she recognised it perfectly. Wether I would have cared if she or anyone else had told them it was not her or anyone's place and my am.ost 70 year old, religious, partly raised by nuns, Italian grandma got something even my own mother didn't.
In the end my uncle then got it and even though he said some crap out of nervesness at least he even asked me if he could tell my aunt and I've never been prouder of my family.
