Great White Lies π
Great White: a type of shark. White Lie: a harmless and, often, even beneficial untruth or deception. Fishy business: suspicious happenings.
On death, sacrifice and hope
Gonna share some personal reflections about one of the reasons GO3 resonates with me. Not seeking to persuade anyone, only to share. TW: I will be talking about death and GO.
IRL among other things I'm a campaigner against biodiversity loss and climate change. I see daily how hard it is to effect change in a system that's stacked against you. Itβs tough to keep fighting, year after year.
Sacrifice is a huge part of working to make the world a better place. Perhaps it shouldn't be, but it is. People through history and today choose every day to sacrifice a piece of themselves in these fights - whether that be climate change, civil rights, anti-fascism, democracy, whatever.
That sacrifice can be time, money, personal freedom, relationships. Maybe you take a pay cut. Perhaps you don't get those weekends with the kids, or cant follow a spouse to a new city. Maybe you burn out, or you risk incarceration. And yes, ultimately, for some, the sacrifice is their lives. We can all name some of those for whom this has been true: Martin Luther King, Emily Davidson. More recently RenΓ©e Good and Alex Pretti come to mind.
Itβs not that you go out there looking for these specific outcomes or actively seek martyrdom. But it comes as a consequence of choosing to fight for a better world for everyone. And thatβs a choice real humans make all the time. It's deeply human, and the reason many of us are where we are now is because people in the past made that exact choice.
It's love, but not romantic love. I truly believe it's so much bigger. Love as sacrifice. Love that transcends the present reality and dares to believe in something better for everyone, even if you may not live to see it.
I believe having the capacity for such love is fundamental to being human.
It's also a brutal reality that sometimes the ultimate sacrifice is the only way that change is achieved. I get that for some it feels bleak. Yes it's a hard truth. But it is true. Sometimes a better world for the many comes at the cost of the few.
This is what Aziraphale and Crowley face at the end. Themselves, each other, status quo, or a better world - no, universe - for everyone else. They choose sacrifice and change.
For me, I see this portrayal and the choice they make not as bleak, but as inspiration to keep fighting. A&Cβs choice wasnβt in vain. They succeeded. They created our world, and perhaps even gave birth to that capacity for transcending love in all of us. And my interpretation of the end is that at least part of them lived on and got to see it. Thatβs everything that anyone fighting these fights really wants, in the end.
So I personally take hope. It sits alongside sorrow at the necessity of the choice, and what is lost as a result. The things that cant be, the words unsaid, the futures that could not happen. But to me, the ending says that change is possible, and that sacrifice can have meaning - even if hopefully, for most of us, weβll never face quite that high a price to keep fighting.
What if I told you you could just, not like a thing?
What if I told you that in not liking a thing, you could let go of the need to justify why the thing is bad? You can not like a thing and it can not be personal. You can not like a thing and it can just be a thing you don't like. You can not like a thing, be disappointed by a thing, and not dig through tweets and interviews and β¨cLuEsβ¨ and just. Not like it. What if I told you you could not like a thing and also not invent conspiracy theory level excuses as to why that thing obviously is bad? What if I told you other people liking the thing you don't like is not personal? That you are allowed to like different things. That you don't have to ruin the enjoyment for folks who did, actually, like the the thing in order for you to not like the thing?
What if that was a thing I told you you could do?
What if you allowed yourself the grace to accept a thing you thought was good did not meet your expectations, and you thanked it for the good things it gave you, and let your anger go?
What if?
Good Omens: The world is made of queer love and queer love is an inevitable part of it.
At least, Crowley and Aziraphale's part of the story is about that love in the broadest sense: they love the world, themselves, and each other in ways that those with power don't approve. That's why developing their relationship beyond what's in the book fits so naturally with the themes and story.
I know a lot of people don't like the ending, but it also follows that theme: a world (the same world, really, with the same people) now centered on that love of the godless things they're not "supposed" to care about, their hopes and desires for what a free-er life can be, and their love for each other an inevitable product of that world, reappearing naturally even when a greater power says it won't.
I think it's beautiful.

Messing About, Stacking the Deck, and Free Will - Why the themes of Good Omens Season 3 Worked for me
Hey all, it's been a bit of a rough time for us, hasn't it? I really enjoyed the finale, compromises, heartbreak, and all. I don't want this to come off as scolding or telling anyone they are wrong to feel the way they do, or that they don't 'get it,' because the finale allows for a multitude of valid and contradictory readings. But I haven't seen too many people talking about the things I've been mulling over for several days now?
I think part of the divide here is cultural, philosophical, religious, etc. Like, we're over here as a fandom trying to settle the longstanding question of Predetermination vs Free Will (among other things) in the space of four ten days!!! These are NOT trivial questions being brought to the fore!
Part 1: Messing About
I was really excited by season 2, I loved it, I think it is probably still my favorite? S2 E2 is perhaps the best television I've ever seen. And yes, season 2 focuses on the romance and relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley, but it also focuses on their relationship to *humans*.
The thing I was so excited about when season 2 first aired was in direct relation with something Adam says towards the end of the first book:
And after watching season 2 I was stoked!! "OH!! They're going to address that point in the final season!! I see now!!"
Part II: Stacking the Deck
I have seen quite a few folks bemoaning the gambling subplot and complaining that it takes up too much time but, in my opinion, it is *thematically* load bearing, and you really can't remove it because it is the bridge between "messing about" and the question of Free Will.
Part III:Β Free Will
Free Will in Good Omens is a bit of a sticky wicket. It is said that angels and demons do not have Free Will, but that humans do, that they get to choose, but... do they?
Part IV:Β Putting it All Together
So, at last, we come to the final sequence. In the show Aziraphale and Crowley are alone with Satan and God, and almost the whole of Creation destroyed.
A NIGHTINGALE | Good Omens 3
Just realized we have the proof Good Omens 3 still follows our real timeline (just like s1 and s2)
The meteor shower Anthony mentions and observes in the final scene is the Eta Aquariids, a meteor shower associated with Halley's Comet and visible in the Aquarius constellation. FYI, they were active from April 19 to May 28 with their peak around May 10 this year
The finale released on May 13, right during the peak
It's these kinds of lovely thoughtful details that makes me love Good Omens and rewatch it over and over again without getting tired of it. It's just perfect
Such observations are the cause why I love GO and the fandom
Oh. Oh. I am having a moment here.
The *screen ratio* changes when we go from one universe to another. Up until the epilogue, we watch everything in cinematic widescreen, with black bars on the top and bottom.
And then when we reach the epilogue, those bars... they go away. We've broken through.
Oh this is brilliant.
In every universe, time after time
Can you spot Aziraphale and Crowley in every universe? Here, Iβll help youβ¦

Honest (SPOILER) thoughts regarding the GO finale, I think a valuable piece of writing people are kinda overlooking is the INCREDIBLE subversion of their main motivations
Like we as the audience are lead to believe from the start that Crowley is this jaded, cynical little fucker whoβs fond of one person and one person only. The typical βnothing in this world matters except youβ grumpy who doesnβt give a shit about a universe that rejected him. Aziraphale, likewise, is pretty easily seen as the bigger picture guy, itβs obvious he loves Crowley deeply but itβs the mission of the larger world, the good of the people, that draws his time and energy- he chooses that responsibility more than Crowley. These are the roles weβve seen them play and the archetypes weβve kinda locked them in to. It matches with their grumpy vs sunshine attitudes, their aesthetics etc
Then in s2 we started noticing some cracks in it. Weβve met Angel Crowley who is a beautiful sunshiny dreamer who cares so deeply about the gorgeous world around him. Aziraphale starts to get a bit wrapped up in his own self interest from time to time, caring more about his bookshop or Crowley or even Jim than his larger mission. These little moments added depth to their characters, but ultimately didnβt shake our ideas of them. But THEN-
When they were asked by God what they would save, everything in the world has been stripped from them. The universe is lost- all that remains is each other and the final question of βwhat in the whole of existence matters to you most?β And we think we know what theyβll say, we think the way weβve been taught all this time- Crowley is the selfish lover and Aziraphale is the heartbroken rejector.
But instead we meet their cores. We meet the truest stripped down versions of themselves and we learn the truth. Aziraphale picks Crowley. His lover, his life, the being that completes him. He makes the selfish, or loving, choice, no matter what it means to the world. And Crowley- Crowley is crying for the world. He is so utterly helplessly desperate for humanity to have their chance that heβs willing to throw away everything out of his sheer love for them. Weβve met the old part of him again, the artist and the lover, the selfless one heβs had within him all along. And for Aziraphale weβve finally met the lover in him too, the one whoβs finally willing to put his love for Crowley above all else.
I donβt know but I think itβs absolutely beautiful to get to know characters that you thought had these black and white motivations, only to discover that when it all comes down to it, they are capable of throwing everything we assumed about them out the window. Thereβs no black and white or even grey, but a whole world of mixed up colours and choices that make them whole. The sinful Angel and the selfless demon to the last.
GO hot take apparently
Imagine finding out you have 90 minutes to tie up a love story that's developed over thousands of years. You create something beautifully in character and completely on point for the plot. You pay homage to the original writer's legacy in a fitting and poetic way and create an ending that not only shows the depth of two people's love for each other but the wider love they have for the thing that brought them together in the first place.
And then you go online to find the loudest outcry is that everyone hates it and "THEY DIDN'T EVEN KISS!"
I feel sorry for people who didn't get anything out of that stunning finale.
Literally Crowley:
Fans: Crowley had it always all worked out, he knew Heaven was bad and he wanted nothing to do with it anymore so he made the decision to fall.
Literally Crowley:
Fans: Crowley hates being forgiven and Aziraphale saying those words hurts and angers him.
Literally Crowley:
Fans: Crowley doesn't 'believe' in God. If only Aziraphale too was smart enough to leave his 'religion' behind as well.
Literally Crowley (again):
Fans: Crowley wanted to fall and become a demon to be 'free'.
Literally Crowley:
Aziraphale: "Oh. You made it [the nebula] all yourself?" Crowley: "Ah, well, I mean, more or less... I wasn't⦠I wasn't, uhm⦠I wasn't the original concept designer, but I worked very closely with upstairs on it."
Fans: Crowley single-handedly created the whole UNIVERSE!
Literally Crowley:
Fans: Crowley is free and wants to be a demon so he can do and say whatever he pleases unlike Aziraphale who can't bring himself to 'give up' Heaven.
Literally Angel!Crowley:
Fans: Crowley was in one of the HIGHEST possible ranks of angels and he knew everything.
Crowley is far more interesting than the fanon version of him where he always knew everything, was a big shot in Heaven, gave it all up because Heaven is bad and understands far more than Aziraphale does. And of course, does not need to change or learn anything at any point of Good Omens. The problem is all Aziraphale who for some reason Crowley fell in love with. So all Aziraphale has to do is stop being a blind, naΓ―ve goody-two-shoes and finally listen to Crowley.
Crowley is not more free than Aziraphale is. He can complain, express how shit everything is, unlike Aziraphale, but even that within reason. He says no one is paying attention when Aziraphale is worried for him again and again, but - they do pay attention. As they find out in 1941. Crowley always had to do his job - or pretend to and take credit from humans; and he would still have been punished if the Arrangement was discovered or him working with the enemy in any capacity. Or for doing his job badly. Like say, losing the Antichrist.
They were just pretty lucky for 6000 years. Mostly because Hell was overworked and Aziraphale made sure they severely underestimated him in Heaven and took him for a silly little angel who understands nothing. Crowley didn't mean to fall and Hell, after all, is even worse than Heaven. Because Heaven made it so.
That's what the end of the world meant. No more world. Just endless Heaven or, depending who won, endless Hell. Crowley didn't know which was worse. Well, Hell was worse, of course, by definition. But Crowley remembered what Heaven was like, and it had quite a few things in common with Hell.
Crowley would never want Aziraphale to fall, it would solve nothing. And Aziraphale never wanted to make Crowley angel again to make him happy. There is no happy for them while Heaven and Hell are both awful places. And they both know it. What Aziraphale wanted in F15 was to stay together.
not an update, I'll just share some thoughts bc they may help people who are feeling nervous about GO3.
You see, things often aren't as good or as bad as we dream them to be. so many times I've seen them painfully (or blissfully) fall right there in the middle.
In my "realistic" view (and this of course only **my** view, don't take anything that I say in this post as nice and accurate) the movie will be mid. the writers received a task designed to go wrong. transforming six-ish hours in one and a half is... insane. besides, we don't even know if they were good six-ish hours; s2 has many problems around the writing that i believe we all can recognise. BUT! as was proven also in s2, it can still be enjoyable. everyone involved is too competent.
So! a lot will bother us, a lot we will love. we will be left wanting more, and that will make us thrive as a fandom. we will keep creating and giving the characters all the love and stories they didn't have time to develop.
Result of we getting a mid finale? we will still be here, creating and enjoying fandom together.
but let's extrapolate now. what if things don't fall in the middle?
pessimistic view - movie is shit. the writers couldn't save a line of it. what Neil planned wasn't nice to begin with and transforming all that in 90 min was truly an impossible task. Terry's touch is lacking even more, everything feels ooc or soulless.
we still have the beautiful cinematography, costumes, set design and acting, because I truly don't think they can miss on that, but the script really shits the story.
but the thing is - s2 made the fandom so alive bc it wasn't as good as s1 (this makes me think of the good place; the series is so round and sound it doesn't leave much space for transformative works). ofc the fandom before the show and after s1 was already very big and alive, but i think we all saw how bigger it got after s2. i really believe one of the reasons for that is because s2 isn't as sound as s1. I hope that this would happen in this case too. the fandom is infuriated by the finale, lots of big feelings that led us to create.
Result of we getting a bad finale? we will still be here, creating and enjoying fandom together.
optimistic view - the idea for the finale is actually super good, and for some damn reason it works brilliantly for 90 min, even more than 6h. the cinematography, acting, set design, music and costumes on top of the incredible script makes so that this is the best piece of media we could've got.
the fandom is happy. we still want more, because we always will want more of this universe, and that want keeps us around. we make metas, we analyse every frame, we talk, we share, we write and draw and all the other fun stuff.
Result of we getting a good finale? we will still be here, creating and enjoying fandom together.
in short, we will be fine no matter what happens. by now the GO universe is *our* sandbox. the place we chose to meet and to play around, and no matter what canon turns out to become, it can still be that if so we decide.
now I'll stop the serious talk ππ come play bingo with me! I made some predictions and wishes a while ago if you wanna see, and I'd love to read yours! there's even templates there >:]

The Second Coming
Ha-- great pun! Madame Director Lady is so funny π And she's talking about wordplay π that I've written about before, including briefly in the Golgotha post yesterday. I think I can answer her questions. *grins*
How does Easter being "the first coming" relate to it also being the birthday of one of Madame Director Lady's kids? (And Happy Birthday to them!) Because a birthday is the celebration of a person's arrival into the world-- and another word for an arrival is a coming... and the verb to come is the one we use to mean a person's, ah, arrival-- an orgasm-- which can be part of the process that leads to a kid coming into the world. Her post is a pun around the definitions of arrival and coming/the verb to come.
There are literal, metaphorical, and euphemistic meanings of a coming. Sometimes, we're talking about literal birth-- like a baby being born. Sometimes we're talking about a literal arrival-- like that of Gabriel, in his birthday suit, in 2.01-- an episode entitled The Arrival. (That scene was also "the second coming" of Gabriel at the shop door to us, as we'd only seen him there one other time before.) Sometimes, though...
...we're talking more metaphorical arrivals/comings-- a more metaphorical sense of being born. The first of something, the beginning of something... But that's when we have to consider what a beginning also is, which is... an ending.
The Second Coming is Armageddon-- The End of the World-- but it is also the arrival of The World to Come.
Because a coming, an arrival, a birth of something new? By definition, that is a change that denotes the end of the world that existed before that coming, that arrival, that birth. Every new beginning is also the death of the world that came before-- and every death, every end? That is also the beginning of a new world to come.
So, when then, as Madame Director Lady wittily asked, is the 2nd coming?
